I recently bought the MarCum VS 500 underwater viewing system. So far I only have used it ice fishing. I bought it over the other models for several reasons: 1) the unit has motorized “ice arm” that allows you to rotate the cable 360 degrees from inside your shack (you can put it outside and view most or all of your lines at once, 2) it is a compact package, 3) it has both IR-VU and Hi-VU lighting options; the others have one or the other, 4) the guys selling all the models said they personally like this one the best.
So far, I really like the unit. It has added a lot of pleasure to my ice fishing expeditions. I plan to use it in my boat this summer. However, in bright sunlight, the unit will be much more difficult to see detail on. The distance the camera can see is very dependent upon the clarity of the water, which is not the best in most South Dakota lakes during the open water season.
