Have heard the duramax diesel was the best out. I personally have a 99' Sierra with the 5.3L gas engine. I use a 2001 Dodge at work and have been in numerous Fords. If I were to buy today, it would be GM for many reasons(quality). I dont think you can go wrong with your choice. Good Luck
I have a F250 Ford 4x4 with a 5.8 that I use for towing my boat and being 11 years old with 88000 miles I have had no major problems. I am not impartial to any trucks and have owned Chev, Dodge also and have never had alot of problems. But I will tell you one thing I was up north last week and had to move a guys truck that was in the way. It was new a 3/4 ton Chev and after I backed it up and turned it off I did not know it had a diesel engine it. I started like a car not knowing it had a diesel and I could not here the motor run. I don't know if the Duramax is a good motor but it is sure quiet. I would buy it.............

I just picked-up my 2001 Chev 2500HD with the Duramax Allison Combo last week and am very impressed so far. I have yet to pull my Yar-Craft Storm, but I can tell you it will not be a problem. The specs say it can pull 12000 pounds!! There is so much power in this rig you can't believe it.
This is my first diesel powered vehicle. I was skeptical with the noise of a diesel at first, but this is fairly quiet and again the power is awsome!!
If you have any specific questions you can e-mail me.

I don't own one but I wish I did. They are really expensive but they are the best out there. Ford and Dodge have had the best diesel trucks until the 2001 Chevy came out. If you get one, you should consider getting the Allison transmission.
I have a '93 6.5 Turbo diesel that I have had to modify to be able to get the power to pull my boat with my camper on the truck. I put a larger exhaust system on, intercooler, aftermarket boost controller, turned up the fuel pump, and other miscellaneous things to get it to perform up to its potential. It always bugged me that Chevy did not make these relatively simple adjustments before they sent these trucks out the door.
That being said, from everything I have read the new Duramax/Allison combo has had years of testing and evaluation to get everything right before they put them on the market. I think that you will find a very powerful, reliable, and quiet truck in the new Chevy. I hope to buy a used one in a few years.
Below is a link to a website that I have read a lot about the Duramax:

I have just over 10k trouble-free miles on my 2500HD 4-door with the 6.5' box (by the way, the Allison is standard with the Duramax - not an option).
I pull a Ranger 620 like its a Jon boat. Truly awesome power. Overall, fuel has been much cheaper and the economy is great. 18-19 mpg when not pulling, 15-16 when pulling. Just got back from Mobridge S.D. last week and spent hours cruising at highway speeds with the AC and CD blasting and....it was heaven. By the way, 6 of us brought home 252 eyes. Unbelievable!!
Did I mention I love the truck?? I traded in a Suburban and don't regret it. I never did use the third seat anyway. The new truck is about 6 inches longer and a lot heavier (9200 lbs.). It is worth the extra bucks. Lots of pep and a ton of balls.
Did I mention I love the truck??
Go for it,
Dave

It's a fantastic rig! Go to Maximumsled.com and read all about a rather lengthy test of the Duramax, Ford Powerstroke and Dodge Cummings. The new Duramax blows them both in the weeds hands down!!

252 Eyes? Whats the possession limit where you fish, up here we are only allowed 6 and if we plan to have fish in the future thats fine with me. Hope thats a typo error.

I do not know yet about the Duramax Diesel. I have several friends that traded in their Dodges and are wishing they had not. THe allison auto is not holding up like they said it would and the fuel mileage is not near as good as the HO Cummins. I have a HO Cummins and absolutely enjoy it. YOu can pull anything you hook up to and still have an abundance of power. I would recommend a Dodge Diesel. You can not go wrong.

There are special reg's on Lake Oahe. You are allowed to take 14 walleye a day with a 3 day possesion (42 fish)limit. The NON-resident, Lake Oahe only, license is $20 and is good through Feb 2002.
The GF&P (DNR) claim that the Lake Oahe walleye population needs some thining. Of course - there are many view points on this subject and some archived threads on this web site as well.
I was out there about a month ago and you catch a ton of 14" - 16" fish. We caught maybe 200 fish with just a few over 20".
I sure hope this new and real world unproven product lives up to the praise and expectations of you bowtie boys!!! I would hate to see you guys eating crow if GM's "great" quality shines through }>!!
seriously, I hope this truck lives up to the hype and expectations~~~it will raise the bar (as Ford did with the superdutys) and we will all benifit with better products

i have a new duramax the allison is great i pulled two 30ft sports from port clinton to erie pa without a lick of trouble the dodge or should i say the cummins engine is good but the rest of the truck falls apart if you get a dodge get a manual trans and save your monet for steering boxes i dont know much about the ford except that they dont like to start when it is cold and the injectors are pretty expensive to be replacing every year oh well my two cents duramax power is all i can say ... keep the greasy side down and the sunny side up

No typo....
The special regs allow 42 per person. They are begging people to help them with their "problem". They have a huge population of stunted fish 13-15 inches with nothing to eat since the main foreage base crashed a while back. We caught well in excess of 500 fish, all below 20 inches. The booklet they hand out mentions the "problem" as "historic" in nature. So, we made the trip and had a great time. Fish are stacked on every wind-swept point. There is very little fishing pressure. It's a long haul from MPLS but there's fun to be had.
Tomorrow at work I am feeding 60 people.
Take Care,
Dave
