Hey everyone.I just picked up my new boat.Finaly.And the guy was showing me everything, and said Oh and you have to take this wire off the batteries when you plug in your charger. Is this correct or is this guy not real bright? Thanks for the input.

Nope!

That is not at all true. A 24 volt system does not have to be tied together at the batteries. They can be tied together via this plug:

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jhtml?id=0000967015230a&navAction=push&navCount=5&indexId=cat21380&podId=0000967&catalogCode=ID&parentId=cat21380&parentType=index&rid=

There are instructions that come with the plug to guide you in how to do all of this. Once done, you can charge your batts anyway and any time you want to and they will charge as separate elements as long as you have unplugged your trolling motor lead from the female receptical. A lot of dealers' don't wire these plugs in to save, what else? - MONEY!!!

I believe what he was trying to tell you is a 24 volt system is 2 - 12 volt batteries wired in series. That means you have a wire connected from the positive terminal of one battery to the negative terminal of the other to get 24 volts. If you try and hook up a 12 volt charger to the 2 output leads or terminals you would be trying to charge a 24 volt system with a 12 volt charger. Doubt it would work. Now if you disconnect the wire connecting the 2 batteries together and charge each battery individually a 12 volt charger would work fine. I am unsure how the plug Ranger referred to works but it may be a viable option.

The plug I referred to does the series wiring at the plug and not the "jumper" at the batteries, therefore, you can attach your charger to ANY of the batteries without worrying about screwing things up - plain and simple. Otherwise, you need to remove that "jumper" to charge the batteries individually - OR - double your charging time!!

if it's a name brand onboard charger, just plug it in no matter 12,24,36 volt. if it's not an onboard charger, like mentioned earlier, you have to disconnect at the battery (if it's only a 24volt trolling motor) and that it's done AT the batteries, if it's switched to 24volt at the trolling motor plug, you shouldn't have to.....we/you need more info to determine which.
