Something of a debate is rolling on another post about 8 to 10 foot waves. Many questions were raised about how to measure waves. Well, here's another example why the old paper graphs were valuable.

With my paper graph I was able to produce print record of waves on Lake Michigan we managed to stay afloat in that measured over 10 ft from peak of wave to valley before the next wave. On paper it is quite dramatic. Also, with the paper you don't have to pay attention to the graph -- you can attend to the tricky navigation matters needed to get to home port.

My theory -- Anyone who fishes Lake Michigan regularly for over 30 years is going to get caught in very heavy seas. It can happen faster than you would imagine. Rather than argue about the full height of the waves, I'll pay attention to tips on how best to handle water craft under such conditions.

Safe boating to all.
