I would love to upgrade the motor on my houseboat. Currently it's a 1986 johnson "88 special". Its old, smoky, and crotchety. Have an opportunity to purchase a 2000 model 70 hp , 4 stroke evinrude with probably under 10 hrs on it. Anyone have any experience with this motor? Good/bad? I can get it for around $5,500.

I don't know if the price is good or not but the motor should be a good one. The only real problem motor OMC made were the Fitch motors. Beyond that I believe all their motors are good. The four stroke may (probably is) be a rebadged from another manufacturer.

I have a 2000 50 HP Evinrude 4 stroke and I absolutely love it. It's made by Suzuki. Others have apparently had problems with the 70 HP motor. As is common in the industry, the 40-50 HP motors share the same block as do the 60-70 HP motors. Suzuki wasn't the only brand with problems with their 4 stroke motors in that time frame. If I remember correctly, my dealer mentioned that one of the Yamaha 4 strokes (can't remember which unit...) also had problems.

I no longer sell them, but that particular model has been a very good engine.

I had a 2000 70 Evinrude 4 stroke for 3 years. That is one sweet engine! The best outboard in it's size catagory I've ever had. Super quiet, very fuel efficient. Starts at the turn of the key and never, never dies until you turn it off. Even though OMC-Evinrude is out of business, I wouldn't let both you. The engine is really a Suzki motor and service is available from any dealer.

If you don't get it let me know where, I might have to upgrade my motor.

I have a 1999 70 hp 4-stroke and it has been flawless in all kinds of conditions. Never had a problem and I have almost 400 hours hobbs time on it. The top end of the engine is Suzuki and the lower unit is OMC. Never had to have service done on it but any Suzuki or OMC dealer would be able to work on it.

I believe that in 1999 I paid around $5800 for it so that price doesn't sound to bad.

Boatnut,
BUY IT. It's steal. I have a 1998 4-stroke Evinrude/Suzuki and it is by the far the best engine I have ever had in 40 years of boating. If you pass it up you have a screw loose. Have your wife call me. I just talked my wife into a new Crestliner with a 115 4-stroke Johnson/Suzuki. I know how to sweet talk women into new boating equipment.
