I need some help finding a good trustworthy mechanic in the Mpls metro area. I have 90hp Johnson that started spitting water out the exhaust this weekend. Is this a serious problem?? What is wrong, head gasket, mani-fold cracked? Any suggestions and info is greatly appreciated.

It sounds to me like the exaust manifold gasket. It's shot and letting in water from the water jacket which is right next to it. Not too big of a problem if this is what it is. Take the motor into the shop and tell them what's happening. Replacing these gaskets can be son of a #$##% to get at, so your better off leaving it to a marine mechanic. Hope this helps. EE

Unless I completely misunderstood your question....
The bulk of your cooling water NORMALLY goes out with the exhaust.
The pee stream , you see, is just a visual aid to see if your water pump is actually working. But the water coming out that little pee hole is just a small amount of the water actually being pumped.
Sometimes that pee hole gets plugged, and you see no water, and there is still plenty of cooling water going through the engine, but is is going out with the rest of the water...out the exhaust.
And sometimes when you see no water coming out the little overflow hole ...you actually do have a bad water pump.
Did the engine get hot?
I've seen lots of motors, new ones, that have water come out the exhaust ports on the back of the lower cowl area. I've seen lots of the big block v6 omcs and small yamahas do it. I've had a 30 yamaha that's done that since day one. It's an 87 and never given me a problem.

Unless you have water coming out from inside the cowling you are "OK".
As your RPM increases the amount of water shot through the same area as the exhaust will increase. This is by design and unless you are having other functional problems, clear sailing!

Thanks for the input everyone!! I called a couple local places and they said to bring it in and they would check it out. The third place I called gave me the same response you guys did, it's normal for that engine, especially at idle.
