Just curious..where is the water pump located on a 75 Honda? Does the whole lower unit have to come off? I opted to let the dealer change it rather than trying it myself since I didn't know where to find it..probably a good idea..huh? Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris)

Sluggo, I'm sure its located in the lower unit, and I'm sure you have to drop it to change it. Its not that difficult to change. If you don't have a repair manual, take a trip to your local library, they have a great assortment of manuals for all makes and models of outboards.
P.S., what year is your Honda?

John..The motor's a '98. Last Thursday it appeared to have overheated. The red light came on, the alarm sounded and the rev-limiter engaged. A few minutes later it cleared and ran fine. We noticed that the water stream was intermittent while in alarm. We took it very easy coming back in, so I'm quite sure there was no harm done. First hiccup the motor's had since new so I really can't complain! I'll check our library for a manual..good idea..thanks. Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris)

yes the water pump is in the lower unit. were you going through shallows when the light. you could have picked up some weeds or something? you should still have the water pump checked. if you have never done a water pump before you should watch it done. it is a rather easy thing but if you are not sure of yourself doing it, let a shop do it.

It's at the top of the lower gearcase, like any other Mercury lower unit. If you took it to a Honda dealer, you may be able to save a few $$ next time by going to a Merc dealer. The impeller is a Merc part, with a Merc part number.
I replaced the impeller on my 90 HOnda last season.
