Hi,

I will be picking my new Lund in two weeks and was wondering do I really need to install a fuel filter with water seperation feature?

The motor is a Yamaha F115 and I am think of installing a high quality filter in-line along with the stock filter that comes with the motor.

Any input will be very much appreciated!

Unless you are using portable fuel tanks which you can periodically flush to deconaminate, you should use a water separator. Boat fuel systems are vented. Because of the vent, moisture has a way to enter the fuel system. Since fuel is lighter than water, the water settles at the bottom of the tank. Since many tanks draw from near the bottom of the tank, that water will get sucked up into the fuel lines.

If the filter that came with the motor serves as a water separator, then the matter is already addressed. If not, add one. It's not that difficult.

My dealer insisted on installing one on my boat 5 years ago and I change the filter every 1-2 years. Seems like cheap insurance. Go for it.

Thank you everyone for your post!

Looks like it will be wise to install one.

Okay my next question is which brand to purchase and what model such as gallon flow per hour etc?

Will you guy suggest the one with a clear bowl in the bottom with a screw to drain water so something?

Thank you in advance and your help will always be appreciated!

I would just get a spin on type that looks like a oil filter. The ones with a clear bowl are nice, but they usually use those for heavy duty applications. The last 2 boats I had used spin on filters.

My F115 fuel filter has a water separator in it - a little screw off bowl. I beleive the manual recommends emptying it at least once per year. The filter is on the port side of the motor

HAS anyone changed a Water seperator on a 200/225 OptiMax? It is such a small space to work in. I cannot determine if the connector on the bottom of the seperator pulls off or screws off. The manual says pull it off. Just wondering if someone has some tips before I go tearing inot it. Thanks!
