View Full Version : Synthetic oils smoke less?
A friend was trying to talk me into using synthetic oil in my 2 stroke claiming it would smoke less and not build up near as fast while trolling. Is there any truth to this?

No! I tried it and it smoked just as much.

My experience is that a good quality synthetic smokes a lot less than petro oil, and does not foul plugs nearly as bad.

I agree, a GOOD synthetic will smoke less and fouling plugs will be less of a problem.

I ran Amsoil through my previous motor - a 1999 Evinrude 225hp carbed. The truth is, while the lubrication qualities may have been superior, it smoked just as much as any other oil I'd put in it. And this motor smoked like a chimney. There are a lot of advantages to synthetics, but I think the "less smoke" thing is just an angle.

It also depends on which Amsoil two-cycle oil you are talking about. I use the regular injector oil (AIO) in my 115 Merc and it does smoke less than the oil I used before. I also use the racing two-cycle oil (TCR) in motocross bikes and it smokes pretty good until the engine is at race temperature. In a marine engine that doesn't get that hot, the TCR would probably put up a pretty good cloud....
