View Full Version : Crankbait Knots
I've heard that tying cranks on as opposed to using snaps and swivels is best. What have you gals and guys found? Also, I think Rapala has a knot they suggest, can any one point me in the right direction for this knot or any other that is good for tying on cranks?
Thank you - erik

The rapala knot is diagramed in the box with a flyer that comes in the lure box.
However, the general opinion (WC) here is to use a snap (not a swivel) to connect to the lure. This does not restrict the action and allows for quick lure change.
Crosslock snaps are the best.

I use the Rapala Knot on all my crankbaits. I find it real easy to tie, and its one less thing (snap) I have to keep in my tackle box.
Just my 2 cents

I run just a snap (no swivel). I prefer the type which is one piece of wire, which locks on itself "twice". Cabela's refers to these as "duolock" snaps. Regardless of what terminalogy is used (most catalogs, etc, use the wrong name, or interchance the names) it is the only snap I've ever seen sold just as a snap (ie no swivel). These snaps are rounded on both ends, which keeps the line and lure centered and lets the crankbait run true.

Agreed the double rounded end of the duolock snap is the best. Very strong for their size and light. I noticed Bass Pro and Cabelas sells them as "duo-lock" snaps. I have even used them in front of a jig with success. If you get the smallest size, it still looks natural and doesnt affect lure action. I think the smallest size is like rated at 20 lb. strength. That is higher than any knot on the fishing line that I use.

When long-lining in the fall, I will tie the crankbait with a king sling knot. It's a pain to tie, but works well with the heavier line I use on my downrigger rods.
There is a looped clinch or Trilene knot that works well with lighter test lines.

When you guys use the duoloc snaps, do you connect to the split ring or the lure eye?

I use the ancient Duncan loop.

If a lure comes with a split ring it is best to attach to it. Some people add a split ring to those lures without one but you don't need to if you attach with a round ended snap. You just want the lure to be able to wobble freely to get the proper action for that lure.

For deep diving cranks I use the split ring provided, but not with minnow imitators like a Rapala original or a Husky they get no rings as this produces a better action.
Smaller sizes of Rapala's a Rapala knot is best, but for larger cranks a snap is a good plan, especially if trolling.

One properly rigged rod with a duolock snap, can do the job of three maybe more tied rods. Saves space and since the majority of rods I have broken have been stepped on well not being used. Two with snaps and one tied, unless jigging or the technique requires knots.
