I'm going on my Walleye fishing trip next month and need suggestions on a good rod and reel to use.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The kind of water you will be fishing has as much to do with the rod/reel combo as the type of fish does. Where are you going fishing?

Ken, a good setup for you would be a 6' spinning rod with a medium sized reel. No mention as to how you will be fishing, live bait, crankbaits, etc. A rod with medium action will do. I prefer Fenwick rods and Shimano reels. Good luck.

NOT KNOWING WHAT TYPE OF PRESENTATION YOU PLAN TO USE, OR THE TYPE OF FISH (I ASSUME WALLEYE) YOU ARE AFTER - I USE CABELAS IM7 TOURNEY TRAIL RODS IN 6' 6", 7' AND 7' 6" LENGTHS WITH SHIMANO SPIREX REAR DRAG REELS. AFTER A LOT OF YEARS AND MANY MANY COMBO TRIALS, I HAVE FOUND THESE TO BE MY CHOICES. I DON'T HAVE G. LOOMIS OR FENWICK POCKETS, SO, I FOUND THIS COMBINATION AND I LOVE IT. REEL and ROD FOR $100!!!!

Good all around set up is a medium light to meduim, 6'-6'6" spinning rod with a spinning reel of choice.

The prices and combos are endless and depend on your pocket book. If I may, I would like to suggest these three options in order of quality and MY preference (based on actual use on the water). I'm sure there will be a host of options that run the gambit. In the end, use what feels good and make sure you have money left over for bait, pop and gas.

1)FigRig Fiber Pro 661(Med-Light)@ $139 or 662(medium)@ $146 with a Shimano Spirex 2000 rear drag (2 Spools)@ $59. Spool #1 with 10 yards of 10# Trilene XL green Mono @ $5.99/400 yards as a backer, then spool the balance with 8# green Fireline @ $12.99/350 yards tipped with 6 feet of 6# Floro @ 8.99/300 yards. Perfect for live bait jigging and rigging. Spool #2 with 10# Trilene XL green Mono. Perfect for trolling and casting into the shallows. This set up will run about $230-250 total with extra line for other rigs.

2) St. Croix S66MF @ $99 or S60ML @ $79 with the Shimano Sidestab (2 Spools) $39 and the same line package. Cost = $150-170 with extral line.

3) Gander Mountain/Galyan's/Cabela's 6'6" ML action IM6 graphite spinning rod for about $39-59 and Shimano Sidestab (2 Spools) $39 and 6# Trilene XL on one and 8# on the other.
Cost = $80-100 with extra line.

Any one of these combos will provide you with a solid and versatile rig for walleye, northern, crappie, bass or small-med trout in most all fresh waters.

Hope this helps.
