I just purchased the outboard. its probably an early 90's model. I fired it up for the first time and it will start and idle but when I try to give it gas it stalls out imediattly. I'd be grateful for any advice. Thanks Glen

Sounds like you are running on the choke. The thing is most likely gummed up and could use a cleaning. The jets get clogged from old petrol and the carb will fire on the choke circuit but when you apply throttle it stalls out, not enough gas getting past the jet.
Remove and disassemble the carb and give a good soak in carb cleaning fluid. Remember to jot down how many turns the settings of the jet screws are so you can reassemble it correctly.

After soaking in cleaner blow it out gently with compressed air and reinstall.
The job is about 5 min. to remove and 7 min. to install very easy and a simple carb design.
