View Full Version : crawler harnesses
would like some info on harnesses.such as beads & blade combo for big water like saginaw bay & lake erie.
Ron,
The term crawler harness is used to discribe many diferent type leader, bead, blade & hook arrangements. Typical open water harnesses are 30 - 72" long with 2 hooks and a single fairly large blade using 4mm beads. Some use a treble for the rear hook. Central basin Erie aglers use a short (10") long harness with 1 or 2 blades tied with heavy mono, or vinyl coated wire. Some down rigger harnesses even use buzz bait blades on seven strand wire.
It is really too big a subject for this site. Can you narrow it down a little?

I use a pretied rig that is available through Jan's net craft. The snell is around 36" long, has 2 hooks, comes with round red beads, and an interchangeable clevis. I replace the beads with a 6 mm. faceted bead for more reflection, and use whatever blade size, and color works. I always start out with a # 5 colorado blade (gold) then go from there. If I were you I'd also put a top of the line ball bearing swivel out front, alonog with a top line snap. I hope this helped.

My Spinners can change almost everyday depending on the bite. You should have plenty of quick change clevises with an assortment of blades from chartruse to orange and all sorts of natural colors and all sorts of sizes. You can make your own and really get creative. In clear water I like a long leader behind a bottom bouncer, In dirty water it can be shorter. Check our Bait Rigs Tackle Co. They have a link here and have everything you should need.

Wallhanger Lures work great too, see them in products
My favorite blades are from Baitrigs. I use the #5 colorado for erie. My line is 10lb trilene xt. Length is about 5ft. Beads come from the nearest craft shop. Use the size beads and colors to match your blade. I always include a small red bead between the clevis and the blade.
