From everyone's experience where have you found to be the best location for mounting a GPS receiver module? I have recently purchased a Lowrance 1600 and am in the process of installing on my 1775 Pro-V. By the way how do you like the 1600?
Thanks,

Dan

Dan,

Sorry I don't have either the Lund or the Lowrance to give you any specific advice but here goes with some general info.

The main thing for the GPS antenna is to make sure it has a clear view of the sky. Newer units are more tollerant than ones from even two years ago and many will pickup the satelites right through canvas tops, but if you have a location with an open view, I would use it.

In choosing the location, proximity to your VHF antenna is the other significant choice. Durring transmissions, a VHF antenna can generate an electromagnetic field significant to affect GPS reception. Therefore it is a general rule to mount them on opposite sides of the boat and a minimum of 4' appart.

On the Lund style boats I have seen many flush mount the GPS antenna in front of where the port console is/would be on the gunwale -- the VHF is over by the starbord steering console. Others have put it on the bow by the trolling motor.

Hope this helps and good luck with the new rigging.
