I figured this topic would have been covered sometime on this site. I have searched the archives for anything related and didn't come up with anything, so here is my question.

Last week I placed a quart of lower unit oil on top of my livewell while I drained the lower unit. Well Yep, you guessed it!! somehow it tipped. Now no big deal you say, it is a new bottle right off the shelf, with the cap and seal in it right?? NO WAY, not my luck. Even though I had never opened the bottle, somehow, somewhere, someone must have cracked the seal. The good news is that it leaked slowly and only put down a stain as big as a dollar bill. Anyone have experience in removing this thick heavy oil from carpet???

There is a hand cleaner called goop. I use this for general hand cleaning of oily hand and for accidents such as yours. The sooner you deal with this the better.
Good luck,

I agree that a waterless handcleaner like goop is good for this. One thing, though. Make sure you rinse the carpet fully after using it. It can make for a slippery spot if you dont.

Adsorb as much as you can with an old cotton towel (preferably white). Then, use Simple Green on the area to remove the residual oil. Apply it two or three times, lightly scrubbing and rinsing in between. If I visualize this correctly, you should be able to rinse with a hose from inside the boat and rinse right into the splash well.

I second the simple green works great and its biodegradable.

Anyone know how to get out rust from an anchor that sat a little too long on the carpeting on my deck? Thought I would ask since it is a related question...

So far tried carpet removers (Spot shot) and no luck.

I used the product called Scotch Guard Carpet stain and spot remover.

Remove rust with an acid solution, like lemon juice. Or coke. But then how do you get the coke out? REW has talked about a product to remove rust too.

A few months ago my wife printed out a chart off www.marthastewart.com that listed what to use to remove all different types of stains. You might be able to search there for it, as well as pick up some tips on decorating your boat, making some floral seat covers that not only repel dirt, but also make a fashion statement. It's a good thing!

I found a product called "Whink Rust Stain Remover" for sinks.

I used it on a white uniform on which I had gotten a rust spot by letting it dry while holding it on a hanger with a big metal paper clip.

The directions on the brown bottle make this stuff sound like WMD. I was careful with it and only applied it on the spot as needed. Then I washed it out with a lot of water.

Worked fine. Did not hurt the uniform.

This was 20 years ago. Hope you can still find the stuff.

I THINK THE STUFF YOUR LOOKIN FOR IS CALLED GOOF OFF. IT'S A GOOD STAIN REMOVER, BUT YOU HAVE A BIGGER PROBLEM. OIL WILL SOFTEN THE GLUE UNDER YOUR CARPET AND YOULL BE LEFT WITH A BUBBLE IN THE CARPET. I LEARNED THIS FIRST HAND REMOVEING A SPOT ON MY CARPET.
I REPLACED ALL MY CARPET AFTER THIS HAPPENED, NOT AN EASY JOB. THE GUY I GOT MY NEW CARPET FROM TOLD ME OIL WAS THE WORST THING BECAUSE OF WHAT IT DOES TO THE GLUE. HE TOLD ME YOU ALSO HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WITH THE FISH ATTRACTANT SPRAYS THEY CONTAIN A LOT OF OIL AND IF YOU SPILL THEM ON THE RUG ,GET IT UP QUICK.
I WRECKED MINE BY GETTING REAL AGGRESSIVE WITH SIMPLE GREEN AND A BRUSH THEN I BLASTED IT WITH THE HIGH PRESS. HOSE AT THE CAR WASH. THATS WHAT NOT TO DO .

GOOD LUCK DAVE

Lestoil, Lestoil, Lestoil. Works great on oily stains. One word of advice though, whatever you use test it where it won't show to be sure it doesn't change the color of the carpet.

Very simple..Use rust out. It is a powder, that you simply sprinkle n a dampened carpet. The rust out, reacts with the iron stain, and turns it into a soluable solution. take a hose and rinse, it away.

This same product is often used in washing machines to get the rust and or yellow stains out of white clothes. It works well for that as well.

Take care

I would second the suggestion for GOOP hand cleaner. It is also meant for fabrics,so is safe. I like it better than Simple Green.Even though Simple Green is also an excellent degreaser, and good for hard surfaces , GOOP will rinse out of the carpet much easier.

use rust out in a well ventilated area! Read the lable well, it gives off some nasty fumes.
