Last weekend my '96 115 Merc 2+2 began doing something new & strange. When backing out of shallow water with motor trimmed up a bit, I got a ratcheting sound and had no reverse. This happened a couple of times, but when I left the lake, reverse was working.
I have an appointment to have it looked at next week by a new (to me) mechanic. Has anyone run into a similar situation, and do you have a diagnosis & cost estimate?
Thanks in advance. . .

In addition to the above suggestions, check to see if any of your linkages or bellcranks (if you have them) have any jam nuts holding adjustments that might have worked or vibrated loose.
Yep, check these. It could be the nut was loosened. Also, if the cables have any type of "white bulge" in them, that is where it has broken. These are very easy to do yourself, and you can do them in about 30 minutes to an hour depending on if you have extra sets of hands to help you out.
Also, if you do find you need the shift cable replaced, do your self a favor and do the throttle cabel at the same time. Or you will be doing it soon. The cables are about $25 and available anywhere...
Good luck,
