View Full Version : Chevy silverado brake fix?

I've got a '99 silverado 1/2T extended cab 4x4 pickup with just over 12,000 miles. I bought it at 7000 miles last Fall. The problem is when first starting out, the brakes will squeek when applied, worse in colder temps. The shop manager at the dealership says this is normal on the newer (99 on up) chevy pickups. He stated that chevy changed over their brakes in '99, and it is a common problem with no fix. He said due to the moisture on the pads, they will squeek for a short time, especially in colder temps, then get better. Sounded just like what mine is doing, but not sure if I buy it. I've had them check it over, but everything is ok. I talked with a couple other owners of the same year truck, & they have no problems with the brakes. It's loud enough to hear with the windows up & the radio on. After being applied a few times, it goes away. Even when its warm out, still a noticeable squeek. Is anyone else having this problem or do I have a bad set of brakes? It's still under warranty. Thought I'd check here before calling GM.
Thanks!

Take care,

Brad

My '99 Silverado has been squealing since about 12K miles...still doing it...67K miles now...brakes still good.
Just had them checked...wearing normally. Wearing very little, actually.

if it is still under warrinty take to the gm dealer if not happy take to another gm dealer then call costumer service at gm headquarters make sure you have names and the paperwork in order been there done that but a diferent problem. It took two weeks but gm called me back and they fix the problem. Do not let them pull this crap about the brakes

I think the dealer should just pull the pads and install a vibration dampener pad behind the pads. This will stop the squealing you are hearing which is nothing more than the pad vibrating when applied. All after market pads have these dampeners included and as long as you follow directions they usually do not squeal.
I read that the new type of pads on new Chevys wear really well which will be better than 30 m miles replace on a new vehicle like it has been before.

There are lots of truck questions on this forum -- all of which I appreciate. Know of any good truck/car chat sites?

As for the instant brake question, my wife's 2001 Silverado squeels occasionally - - but so does my '80 K10 since I did the brakes in January. So does my '93 Crown Victoria since I did the brakes last July. Seems like they have changed the compound in the linings. I have purchased different brands (Raybestos, Napa, Autozone, and Advanced Auto parts)of linings in the past two years to get away from the squeel problem, but haven't. (I even experimented on my sisters' cars).
Anybody have any old style asbestos lined pads/shoes laying around in their garage for and 80 Chevy pickup?
