I was wondering how a person can tell if a older motor can be converted to accept a power trim and tilt ? it would be either a 40 or 50hp. Any ideas on where the trim and tilt could be located and cost? or does it make sense to just continue to look for a motor with trim and tilt and pay more money
I think you should check and see if that motor has option with power trim & tilt, and if the manufacturer do offer both with or without then I might want to search around and see if you can find a used unit.
The cost of converting an older motor to t&t will be very costly, eventually cost even more that the motor's worth if you are buying every single part new from the dealer.
Try search ebay, you might find your luck there!

If you decide to buy a power trim unit, CMC makes a nice unit. Check out Cabelas web site.

Wkinsella,
I used to work for Panther Marine. I think all in all they have one of the best units in the market. In the 55 hp range I would go with the Model 55. The advantages are that Panther makes a midrange unit so it's not over kill and will adequetly lift and trim an engine of even more thrust.
-Panther uses an electro-mechanical drive so that there is no creep (leak down) which will develop in smaller ram hydraulics.
-The frame to hydraulic connection pins are solid stainless steel rather than roll pins which wear in the frame and cause slop.
-It looks good and is lighter than any of the competition.
Last but not least, Cabelas carries and it is in the $500 range.
So, now I've spilled my guts, you make the call. They both have been on the market for a long time so they both work, just a matter of personal preference.
