Put my new boat and 140 4S Suzuki in the water for the first time this weekend. Really like the motor, but did notice one thing - When trimming up the motor, I noticed a "grinding" sound that lasts about one to two seconds.

I was told by another owner that this is normal - is it?

Me too

I was told the same thing. I was wondering if this is normal too?

I have a 140 Suzuki and when I raise my motor it sounds like there is air in the pump or it is low on oil I had it checked out and was told everything was good

I've experienced this also on both my motors. I'm only guessing, but I think it's the hydraulic fluid "cavitating" if that's the right term during the first part of the lift when the loads/stresses are higher. Or it's like the fluid is leaking by somewhere in the cylinder until it gets going. I've never had a problem as a result of this noise. This is only a guess and if anyone knows the exact cause of this noise I'd love to know also.

Hello Newman. My boat does the same thing but only when it bottoms out on the drop or tops out on the lift.

Gentlemen:

I have run a 1992 Suzuki DT60 since new. It sometimes grinds when trimming. I got the same story( "it's normal" ) and it seems to be true. I do find that if I keep the pivot point greased, the grinding is minimal, but it is a bit of a bother to get at.

Great motor otherwise.

Probably the same sounds we hear with Yamahas, Mercs., and Bombs.
Just air bubbles, if so.

If you guys are saying "grinding noise" and NOT cavatatin or air bubbles in system. Yamaha's have had an issue like this, that this board had a lot of post a couple of years ago. The out come of the post found that it was lack of lubrication on the trim ram tips. The tips had no bearing on the tip like a Merc I had years ago. The tips of my Yamaha V-max's rams where all gouged up. To fix this, I used Permatex Anti-seize Compound. You can get it at auto stores. I put it on the ram tips every 3rd outing and my grinding noise is no longer. Please try this and keep us updated if this stopped the grinding noise. It did on the Yamaha's
