View Full Version : Help! Thrust Washer Removal
I've never had to remove a thrust washer before, how do I go about getting it off?
Thanks
Mike
What kind of motor? On many motors, it just slides right off (not even pressed on).

They usually pop off pretty easily, like Brad said.
It is important to grease the shaft heavy, before re-installing it, and the prop. Use a waterproof Marine grease such as "Triple Guard"
Problem solved, called a marine mechanic buddy, he said sometimes it takes a well placed "Taps" to get them loose, I'd describe my situation as more like "Raps", but it did finally come off.
Now the good part.

Yamaha F115 4 Stroke (2nd mounting hole)
Starting Battery
2-Deep Cycle Batteries
Bow Mount Autopilot
Transom Minn-Kota ? (24V)
Several Tackle Boxes & Rods
1/4 tank fuel
Me=200+ lbs.
19" Yamaha PRO Series = 46.5 MPH GPS @ 5400 RPM holeshot very acceptable
add big Spike from Gander Mountain Bemidji (300+ lbs.) a full livewell and my 12 year old 125+ lbs. performance & holeshot are seriously impacted only 5000 RPM and not sure about top speed except seriously reduced.
17" Turning Point Stainless = 45.6 MPH @ 5800 RPM holeshot very impressive, haven't given it the "Load Test" yet, but it should be considerably better.

19" ProSeries? Where'd you get that? I want one. Or do they make them for the small tube folks and not the V6 crowd.

Mike,
I would guess you are running in saltwater. I speak from experience. My trick was to make a solution of concentrated Saltaway in a large bucket and soak the lower unit in it for several days. I put mine in on Sunday and came back to it the following Friday after work. With that, I was able to wrap a piece of leather belt around the washer and using a pair of channel locks, gently break it free. After that lesson, I have, as suggested, coated the shaft and both washers with marine grease to prevent the problem. Put some on an aluminum prop also.

Yamaha makes the smaller hub PRO Series in 3 pitch sizes, 19, 21 & 23 however in my situation I feel the 19" is just a little too much pitch for all around use, I hate to say it, but sometimes I have to take the kids tubing.
