I just wanted to cry on your shoulders for a minute. I had a monster to the boat in real clear water today. Got to look at him for quite awhile. Just not quite close enough to net. The line broke a foot below the end of the rod. Had to have a nick in the line or something. I'd say he was easy ten pounds, as high as 12. I caught a 10.5 eight years ago and this one looked a bit bigger. Man did that hurt. Oh well, probably woulda let him go anyway, but would have been nice to have a picture. It was a good lesson for the kids to always keep fresh line on the reel. I had respooled about 2 months ago and used it quite a bit this year and it was due.

Big girls not only break your line, They break your heart!. Like the slogan says quote: Pick up some Berkley Trilene, OR WHY EVEN BOTHER!. Where were you fishin?. How deep, How fast, What color, how much line out?, Were you trolling east to west or north to south or se to nw or nw to se or nw with a slow curl to east? "COMA"

I was pullin a gold spinner with a crawler in 7-8 feet of water. I was just a little back of the boat. Felt like I had hooked a cement block until it started to swim away. Got her close a few times but she just would turn and swim away. No hard runs just a casual swim away. Kinda like saying "take a good look at me because this is all you'll get." I wanted to jump in after her. The wife thought it was pretty cool though. Glad she was there when it happened. I just sat there dumb founded. Then told the boys to pull in the trolling motor and let's head for home. She said, "we can stay if you want". I said "no, it's time to go and that was too painful to watch happen."

As my wise Grandpa said, "That's why they call it fishin' and not catchin' boy."
He also added a good visual at the side of the boat or on the bank counts unless you were planning to eat it.... What a good Grandpa I had..
I might also add his favorite fishing song in his German lilt was...
Fishy Fishy in da brook, come and bite on Toddy's hook, Todd will clean you like a man and Grandma will fry you in da pan.

I would rather have battle and loose than to not battle at all.

I got good, however brief look at the biggest walleye I ever caught too. I was in college trolling Thin Fins on Utah Lake. I thought I'd snagged bottom. Then I thought I was reeling up a tree or a dead body. It wasn't until she was near the boat that I realized it was a heavy fish. I finally got her boatside and my buddy went to net her. Using a typical trout net, he went to scoop her up. Her head and tail hung way over the edges of the net, and she just rolled off. The hook stuck in the net and she disappeared in the muddy water.
That was about 10 years ago, so my memory of the fish's size is skewed. But I'd guess she was 12+.

I have one similar.
Two years ago when we had the early spring I took my 11 year old daughter fishing with me for pike and Walleye. The spring run was on big time. We headed for Muskegon lake...
We spend the better part of the day drifting jigging, reseting and pulling in Pike hand over fist. We must have landed 25 so pike just under the legal size, and two that were big. 28 and 30 inches. Sara landed em both.
As the day got long and the wind died down I decided to get away from the river mouth and check out in the Lake. I Trolled for a while but no luck, so when I marked some fish suspended Over a drop off I figured Walleye. I rigged up a Jigging rapala, and within a minute or two Wham. I had the big ole brute right up to the side of the boat, and My Daughter got excited, poked at it and missed him with the net. He took off under the boat and Snap....... To say the least she was bummed.
This spring we have had a real good time catching Bluegills and bass locally.Just a week ago I wanted to go to Saginaw and fish the Bay. I talked her into it but she really didn't want to go. She said she didn't want to disappoint her dad... She hadn't forgot the Last Walleye trip. Anyhow We went, we got rigged up and the First fish was a Catfish that I landed. The Second knock off hit hard It acted like a dandy. I grabbed the Pole out of the holder and let Sara take it. She about freaked when it got close to the Boat. A 8lb. 28 incher. And she is still smiling.
Take em fishing boys, They will Never Forget it. And neither will you.

That's cool using a jigging rapala in soft water, something I have never tried. Obviously it works! Anyone else try this?
He probably was using Trilene. :) Any line can get nicked. CHECK IT OFTEN! As to line preference; you like Trilene, I like Maxima, and others like all kinds of different lines. Let's not get into that argument again.

Solved this probelm of losing big ones at the boat. Big Salmon Net with a six foot handle with an additonal 8 foot fiberglass extension on to the six foot handle. Big fish get near or on the surface, panick, throw the hook, whatever. If you net then 3-4 foot down, they don't go into a frenzy. Save a lot of fish that way. So what do I do. Ford fishing tournament last month, forgot the 8 foot fiberglass extension. Lost 3 big ones, 6-8 foot from the boat.
