My buddy and family are headed to Lake Poinsett in South Dakota for a week in July and have asked me to post an info request for the Walleye Central crew. Your ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Any Poinsett experience out there?
He is a family guy, decent traditional fisherman, starting to learn more about trolling, homemade spinners, etc. but mostly out for a fun and safe time. Thanks in adavnce!
I've only fished that lake once, but found walleye in about 18 feet of water, along the south shore, between the landing on the highway on the west side and the church camp on the south shore. Got blown off the lake by a very modest breeze -- maybe no more than 15kts, but the lake got rough very fast. Be careful.

In July, Poinsett is usually a trolling lake. i do well on Bombers and shad rap RS's trolled in the basin of the lake or around the shoreline contours, usually deeper than 10 feet, except in mornings and evenings. The south end seems to be better for me, but I see lots of boats in the north end also. Spinners and lindy rigs will work well also if you can find fish concentrated, but they're usually not concentrated in July on Poinsett. There's lots of other fish to be caught also. There are huge numbers of white bass in the lake, some large perch, and some nice smallmouth bass.
Good luck, email me if you have any more specific questions I can help with.

I fish lake Poinsett several times a year, but it is either in the early spring, fall or winter, never fished it in summer. Poinsett is a big lake without much structure, we generally have good luck on the south end, in front of the Girl Scout Camp (you cant miss it) with the best bite being in the late evening. Stop at Lake View Resort on Hwy 81 and ask for Bob, he has always given us good information on where to go and whats been working. This spring the water was extremely high and Poinsett was a no wake lake, I don't know if that has been lifted or not. Also don't limit yourself to Poinsett, there are several lakes in the immediate area that offer good fishing. Good luck and let us know how you do.

If things aren't going well on Poinsett, go across the road. That lake has some great pike action and the walleyes quality also. I can't remember the name of it, but the access is right on 81 just south of the boat dealership on the west side of the road. I've got a friend who fishes it all summer. He catches a lot of pike trolling plugs and had release several eyes in the 5lb range.

Lake Albert is what you're thinkung of. Have only tried it once, Memorial Day weekend, didn't catch anything, but my 8yo wanted to go back to camp and play. Have heard a lot of first hand info about catch some nice fish there, though. Good luck, and welcome to South Dakota.
