I replaced a leaky primer bulb with a new and can't get it to fill by pumping it. Should I have filled it with fuel before intalling or will it automatically fill once the engine starts and pulls fuel?
I run a 175 OPTI and don't want to deal with the fuel line at the ramp if it's going to give me problems. I would rather correct it at home.

I replaced mine last year and the new one wont pump up hard if it is in a horizontal position( laying in the splashwell) I have to hold it vertical to get it pumped up hard but then it stays hard while running. I think the check valve isn't closing completely in the horizontal position.

You probably already thought of this, but did you put in on backwards? There's an arrow on the bulb to indicate direction of fuel flow. They only work in one direction.

I was recently told by a Mercury mechanic that the primer bulb should be positioned so that it stays as vertical as possible (engine side of the bulb up). This is particularly so if you have one of the newer bulbs that has a small yellow band on it. When it is in the horizintal position the check valve will not always close completly.
