How do you troll deep water ie... a flat in 25-30 feet of water? And what presentations would you use?

Kidwalleye,
I occationally troll in these depths and have found that leadcore line works good, but you dont feel much when fighting the fish until you get it quite close to the boat. In 30 to 35 feet I put on a #8 or #9 shad rap and let out the 50 foot mono followed by 5 color(50yards) of lead core line then put the rod in a holder and troll about 2.5 to 3 mph. I figure I am about 30 feet deep with the #9 shad rap and 25+ feet deep with the #8 shad rap. This particularly works well in the summer like now in faily expansive areas since you have 200 feet of line out. It works good for following structure also as the heavy line tracts more accurately where the boat traveled. If you want to travel slower you can let less line out and expiriment. You can use snap weights to get down there too but I haven't had much luck with them at higher speeds(2.5 to 3 mph). They are a bit more speed sensitive but work good at 1 to 2 mph. You can use either method for crawler harnesses also.

good luck,
Jim

Because your line will lift at 2.5 to 3 mph, you won't get much depth beyond 3.5 colors of leadcore, even with a diving lure. To get deeper, you'll have to add weight to the leader fairly close to the lure.

KidWalleye,

This is the depth of water we fish in the western basin of Lake Erie. Fireline or another braided line from 10 to 20lb. would be ideal. IMHO wire nor leadcore is not needed until you get below 30 ft.

Determine how high the fish are in the water column. They are not always on the bottom. Invest in the book 'Precision Trolling Guide' availble from the product section on the site. Example, a lure may dive to 10 ft. with 50 ft. of line out. It will go to 15 ft. with 100 ft. of line out.

To many fisherman worry about lure color and troll under the fish which makes for a bad fishing day. Typical trolling speeds for walleye would be 1.8 to 2.5 MPH.

Most big billed lures will get you down 20 - 25 ft. on Fireline. In rare cases you may want to use snap on weights.

Three ways are the ticket! adjust your weight according to the depth and current, if your fishin a river.
