'I'm going to order my lund 1800 fisherman this week.
but I'm going crazy trying to figure out which outboard to choose.
We are mostly going to fish erie. The boat has a maxhp of 175.
Mercury opt ,115 4stroke, or yammi hpdi.

I bought a 150 Opti and have just 14 hours on it. It runs fine, has lots of power, and I love how it starts and sounds. It is easy on gas and oil now that the break-in is done.

But, I gotta say, I only bought it because I got a good deal and because of the 5 year warranty and because the Yammy 2003 HPDI's were all sold out.

If you can find the HPDI, BUY IT!!! I wish I had waited for 2004.

I will forever be worrying about my engine doing the "OPTI Swan song" -- BANG!!!!! followed by dead silence.

Wait till next year and get the HPDI or the new 150 hp 4 stroke Yamaha 4 cylinder. I myself would stay clear of the Opti.

Yamaha,

I'm not sure how big Yamaha goes in the 4 stroke series, and you would want to get near your max horsepower so I would lean towards the Yamaha HPDI. It's what I've got and it's been running great.

To be completely fair though it's more the big blocks in the Optimax's that have had a history of problems. You'd probably be just fine with a 150 Optimax or a 175 Optimax.

Buy the one that you really want. I have personnally been in boats with both motors and they are both good engines. The yammies are more quiet than the merc's. Thats about the only difference I have seen between the two.

I have been running a 150 Opti for last two seasons on an 1850 Tyee I have about 60 hours on it. I have run it slow trolling cranks at 2.5mph, run it hard around LOW and even harder pulling two people on a tube. Through it all, not one issue. I went through the same decision last year. Talked to many pros, Lund Corp guys, Crestliner people. Most leaned toward Yamaha, but none said to avoid the 2000 and newer Optis. When I run LOW Ont. Merc is easier to find parts for. I love it so far and would reccomend it. I am not completely sold on the big four strokes yet.

I posted the same question earlier when I orderd a new boat. I went with a 200hp 4 stroke yammy and love it. Other fisherman at the Cabelas tourney could not believe how quiet it is. I am sold on 4 strokes. As far as yammy or merc who cares as the powerhead is the same, both are good motors.
