A friend is thinking of buying a boat equipped with a 2001 Evinrude FICHT 90 HP. I know some FICHTs have had problems in the past. If you know if this particular model and year is good or bad, please let me know.

If you own of one these, please describe your experiences, good or bad.

Thanks in advance!

I have a 2001 200 Evinrude Ficht that has been absolutely trouble free.

The 90 hp engines have been really pretty trouble free. The early 150 & 175 hp engines are/were a different story. (up to the 2000 model year)

If it is a 2001 90 hp, things should be OK. FYI, the 200, 225, and 250 hp were also very trouble free.

I would not be scared of that engine at all.

One question for you....Does your freind do a lot of trolling? If he does, make sure that he uses ONLY the RAM oil and has the engine de-carboned as needed.

I bought a 2001 90 horse Ficht in August of 2000. Excellent motor. Lots of power, good fuel and oil consumption and very reliable. I have over 300 hours on it, probably too many of them trolling, without any problems other than the missing at wot when the plugs were getting bad. Put new plugs in and she ran like new again until this year. Had the dealer install the plugs this spring and I still have a miss, exactly like when the plugs are bad. I don't think it would be a carbon related problem seems more spark related. It goes back to the dealer next week to see what is wrong.
