After reading numerous posts regarding WOT speed on Ranger's 621 it appears the Mercury 250 is approximately 10+ mph faster than the Yamaha 250. I also get the impression this is the case on other boats such as the Lund 2050. Is the Mercury motor just that much faster or is it due to type of prop or some other reason?

I haven't heard the 10 mph faster part. IMHO Mercury, thanks to their racing division does make alot of different high quality props. The right prop does make a difference. I own a 250 HPDI and it's a very strong running motor. The only comparison documented that I know of was in the Bass and Walleyes Boats shootout. The Yamaha motors downfall was the prop. Also in that same shootout the Merc motor was a "hopped up" Merc motor that is not available from all dealers and does not come with a lower unit. Also you would not be able to use the Merc motor tested on a 25" transom. These test where done on Bass boats not rigged Walleye boats, so for apples to apples comparing to a Walleye rig calls for a little imagination. I seriously doubt the same prop on either motor, will result in a 10 mph difference between these 2 motors on a 621 or any other boat. Just my 2 cents...

I'm going to try a A45 23" Tempest this weekend, I,ve been running the Yamaha Pro series 23" not the best prop for my boat IMHO. Also would like to try a Trophy 23" but in my neck of the woods I have to buy a prop to try it. Kinda spendy...
