Ok, I can get either one for the same price. Mercury 4 stroke 60 efi or Yamaha 4 stroke 60. I know both are reliable motors, the question is, which is better and why? I have had the Merc on order for about two weeks and they still haven't delivered. I can get the Yamaha from stock. Is the EFI a good enough reason to wait for the Merc? The Merc also has a 20 amp alternator vs. 10 amp for the Yamaha. Both will come with new controls so that is not a factor.

Thanks,
Daren

EFI would be worth it in my opinion.

With both being such good engines it's really hard to decide. EFI is why I have waited this long...

If you fish in cold weather, I would get the EFI.

I have the Merc 60 EFI. I don't know if it's EFI related or not, but when I started my motor on Memorial Day after sitting since last Labor Day it started like it had already been warmed up, like RIGHT now.

Yamahas are darn good motors, too. I'm very happy with this Mercury though.

That's the problem, both excellent motors, but the EFI and the extra 10 amps the Mercury alternator puts out sounds so nice. Do I wait for the merc or go for the yamie I can get installed by the end of the week? I flipped a coin but it landed on it's edge....

I'm a black motor fan, but I was on bro-in-laws Yammie 60hp High Thrust on his pontoon, and that was one very nice motor, and it pushed a lot of people at a pretty darn good clip!

Are warranties same on both?

I guess I would wait for the Merc, but you won't go wrong either way, I would not think.

Good luck,

Do they both have the same powerheads? I heard that Yamaha makes them for Mercury.

I owned a 1997 Mercury 50 carb 4 stroke and it was a great motor. i even ran it in 13 degrees at bay de noc. Always ran great. You should have the carbs adjusted by a quality merc person every so often. Your decision should come down to one thing. Who offers the bst service in yuor area. Because no matter what you buy service is king. The product is only as good as the service behind it.

I'm at the dealer that is supposed to be no.1 for service in the area. They have both. They have the Yamaha in stock and the Merc on order. I do like to fish late into the year and earlier than most so I really like the ideal of the EFI. Oh, well, at least I have the ability to make the decision. I have decided if the Mercury is not here by tomorrow then I am getting the Yamaha. The no boat withdrawal symptoms are getting too severe to wait any longer....

Remember, if you can't walk on the water it's still time to have the boat out.

I ended up going for the Yamaha. I got on the phone to Mercury Customer Service and asked about the motor. It ends up that they won't be shipping any until late July. According to my dealer they did not know that. I will be picking up the boat with the Yamaha on Friday evening or Saturday Morning.

If it's a tiller boat, the Yamaha has a nicer tiller handle. Nice enought that most people with a tiller will by the Yamaha.

If it's a console, the EFI motor will give you less trouble.

Your dealer should probably have called around for a Merc 60 4stroke efi. Most dealers have them and are willing to sell to other dealers.

Both are good motors and you can't go wrong with either.

I think you'll be very happy with the Yamaha.

It sounded like a win, win situation. Have fun.
