tried my new otter boats and they are a big improvement over my old triple planer boards...just like i was told by the big jon rep....they run much more lateral..do not lag so far behind the boat and do not pull on my mast like the triple planer boards did ...so if anyone is thinking of getting boards vs otterboats i would recommend the otters...steve...not even close on which is best

My issue with the Otter Boats is that they track too smoothly through the water. I like it when the boards jump, lurch, lag, then start it all over again. It imparts great action to the baits similar to pumping your rod while trolling.

Hey Dennis,
Too smooth in calm water? Where are you fishin???? :P
I have not found that to be an issue with my Otter Boats. In fact, I like them more than anything else I have pulled off a mast.
With flat water, I zig zag a lot, and make the turns a little more erratic. If you want lurching and surging and such, yank the tow lines by hand.
But in all honesty, this flat water problem, has not been a problem for me. And I'lltake the control in bumpy water the Otters afford me over a pile of any other brand.
But then, thats just my humble opinion.......R

Steve,
I have one Otter Boat that someone gave me - with no setup instructions. I tried it twice and gave up on it. I didn't think it tracked far enough out to the side. Maybe it is set up wrong??? Do you have the keel on the outside or inside set of holes? And which way does the weighted side of the keel face? I heard that some guys buy extra keels and this helped it track out to the side better. I've got a good set of redwood boards but may experiment with the Otter Boat again sometime. Any tips appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve Carlson

Steve, I'm sending you the set-up instructions. One problem I've seen with Otterboats is they track too well. It makes it hard to get the releases to slide down the tow line because it's straight out beside the boat. If you take the keel off an old water ski and attach it to the bottom, you'll add enough weight to make them track a little farther back.
