Sewage Threatens Popular Walleye Fishing Hole Lake Mille Lacs

Sewage is threatening Lake Mille Lacs.

That's from pollution authorities.

One of Minnesota's most popular and productive walleye fishing spots is getting too much phosphorous. Bob Newport is a water quality specialist with the Environmental Protection Agency.

He says the sewage could eventually transform Mille Lacs from a place of relatively clear water and a sandy bottom to a lake full of algae, aquatic plants and silt.

That would change the lake from a haven for walleye to a system dominated by bass and sunfish. State, federal and tribal officials meet today to discuss the problem with area residents.

They propose a 23 million dollar sewage treatment plant to combat the problem.

That's why Lake Erie was so dirty looking in the 60-70's. There was too much phosphate in the water and the alge bloomed. Remember you can get phosphates from farm land run off too(fertilizers), not just from sewage plants! Althrough it made it alot easy to catch walleye's, they weren't so spooky with the alge rich water. On the serious side that would be a shame if that happen!
Good Luck!!
