Since we're on the subject.....is it just me or do the BPS Walleye Angler Signature Series trolling rods not hold a Daiwa SG27LC tight? I have two of these combos, and on both, the reel has a slight bit of play. I have the seat as tight as I can get it (by hand), but I can still definately feel the reel move when reeling. Seems like the reel seat runs out of travel before totally engaging the reel.

If you do have a rod/reel like this - and there are some combination reel seats with specific reels that do have this problem. The best solution is to use either a different rod with this specific reel, or a different reel with this specific rod.

However, short of that - and this does work just fine - simply take tape of your choice - perhpas electric tape - or sometimes masking tape - depending on your needs - and take as many wraps around the reel as is required to tighten the reel seat. Do this before putting on the reel, and use just enough tape to put some additional pressure on the ends of the reel to get a better fit in the reel seat. If you find the right tape, and do it carefully, it will be nearly invisible to the casual observer, and it will fix your problem. However, the tape will be able to be removed, so that if a different reel, with a different reel foot on it - the rod can be restored to factory specifications.

p.s.
Your post is exactly the reason, that when I build custom rods, I specifically ask my customers, what reel they are going to use with this rod. Then, I will tailor the length of the reel seat to make a perfect fit for the specific reel of choice. Easy to build in - tough to change after the rod is complete.

Take care

I've got a "bunch" of 2 & 3 year old PK 8'6" rods...all w/ Daiwa 27 LC's and none of them have the problem you're talking about. I'm pretty sure that rod was more or less designed with that reel in mind.

Precisely what I was gonna do. Before I do that, I may try a thin piece of rubber around the "nut" and a small channel lock....perhaps I haven't been eating enough Wheaties!

Yep, you would think that rods designed specifically for walleye trolling would accomodate the most common walleye trolling reel, but mine don't. Of course, it took BPS four tries to get me a rod that wasn't broke, so who knows!

Dave,

REW is correct about wrapping tape. If you want to use different reels with the rod, and don't mind a little unaesthetic look, wrap the tape aroung the actual reels shoe (seat). This way the reel with fit well, and can be removed and replaced with no work.
