The alternator seems to have gone out on my 5.0 MerCruiser. I am heading to the cabin this weekenbd to replace it, however the old alternator is in the boat. Bummer, the wife is on vacation this week. Anyhow, the local dealer has told me it will be $300 and a week delivery from Fon du Lac. Does anybody know if this is interchangeable with a car alternator. I suspect not, but I still would like to know.

One of the major differences between auto and marine engines is their electrical components. You don't want no sparky in the engine compartment or the boat might go boom! Alternators and starters are sealed units against sparks. Check to see if you have a Boat US or West marine store around, they probably stock them. There's also a possibility that your local NAPA can get you the correct marine starter.

yes most (95%) are. There are different amp ratings and the hook ups are different. This coming from a guy working at a auto parts store and a marine dealership.
I'd check Boatus.com or Westmarine.com and get their 800 number and call them. They can probably Fedex you one overnight for a lot less than the $300.

I owned a 5.0 litre MerCruiser and I was specifically told that the alternater, starter, and voltage regulator are NOT interchangable with the automotive version of these parts. The Marine version are sparkproof. Other parts (to name a few) that differ are head gaskets, cams, exhaust manifolds (obviously), and thermostat.
West Marine, Boat U.S. would probably stock the alternator your looking for. Their prices aren't cheap however.
