Just my luck again. I look under my boat today to check on something, and there it is. A 6 inch square of paintless hull. I had read some previous posts where people were having some problems with their paint peeling, but I figured no way this could happen to me. I am now a a very ticked off owner of a boat that should have never come out of the factory. I have a 2003 Pro-V 1800 LE with about 7 hrs on it. I geuss I now have to go through the same nightmare that has plagued a few of you guys too. Thought I would let everyone know, the paint problem has struck again.

Been reading everyone else's posts on this subject and not saying anything, but I can't resist anymore. I have an '04 1850 Tyee (built this June), and the bottom of my hull looks TERRIBLE. Paint missing all over the place. Started the first day I had it on the water. I still support LUND (at this time anyway), but it's pretty embarrasing to say the least. Wanted a new Lund for the past 15 years, finally could afford one, spent close to $40K with everything. My '04 200 Optimax blew up with 15 hours on it also, so the dream has turned out a little different than I had been planning it for 15 yrs. Merc put a new powerhead on (took over a month to get back, though). Problem was not due to any abuse, just a faulty piston (or so I've been told). Still didn't work when it came back, had some little plastic switch on the engine go bad. BRING IT BACK AGAIN... Crystal-Pierz Marine in Brainerd handeled the situation very well, my thanks to them for giving me a barely used '03 ProV 1775 (Merc 115 4-stroke) to use (SWEET boat, should have bought it instead). Tyee's back in the water now, runs great, but boat still needs to be de-rigged and de-engined & sent back to Lund this winter for repainting the bottom. I will let everyone know how this goes. So far, no apoligies or anything of the sort on the paint issue (dealer may not have made Lund aware yet, in Lund's defense).

I am buying a 03 1800 Explorer. Where should I look for these paint defects? Also, I am going with the 115 Yamaha 4 stroke. What did you think of the performance on your loaner boat. What was your top speed?

Thanks

Have a 03 Trournament Sprort, 5 weeks old. Started lossing paint from day 1. Going back to the factory in the Fall when done for the year for a repaint job. Believe they use the same PPG system as LUND......???? There is a procedural problem because the paint is good.

It's starting to sound like Lund isn't going to have room at the factory to work on new boats, too many boats coming in to be painted again. If you want a new one for next year you may wish to put your order in soon. Also, you may want to request it in a natural Alluminum finish. That way, you won't have to send it away next year for repainting...

To you guys who are taking their boats in after the season ends:

I have a 2002 1700 Angler SS. I bought in August of 02. Paint started flaking off the bottom immediately. I called the dealer and arranged to bring the boat in at the end of the 2002 season.

When your boat goes back to New York Mills it is painted on a 1st come, 1st served basis. So keep that in mind when you decide your fishing season is over. I don't know for sure when Lund starts production on the next model year boats but I suspect that any repaint jobs are secondary to production work.

Also, if you like your 2003 paint scheme or don't like it, be prepared to see a 2004 paint scheme on your 2003 boat when it comes back from repainting. I did not know they were going to do that and was not told about it. I discovered it when I picked my boat up in the Spring. I should note that the factory stripped and repainted the whole hull even though the bottom was the only trouble spot. I am glad they did and was hoping they wouldn't just do the bottom. But now my 2002 Angler has the 2003 Angler paint scheme and graphics on it. I am not disappointed at all, the paint job was done well and has been holding up good so far this year.

The thing that got me somewhat upset was that I was told that the paint job would take 6-8 weeks. It was more like 16 weeks of waiting.

Boats are also stored OUTSIDE while waiting for their turn in the paint shop.

Good Luck.

Have any of you guys talked to the dealer about getting it fixed locally? I just talked to my dealer and he said he could get an estimate to maybe get it done locally.

That sounds like a better option if Lund pays for it. Makes good business also as it would satisfy a lot of customers not wanting to strip the boat down to send it back to the factory and never knowing when they'll get it back.

Steve1,

I have a 2002 1700 Lund Angler SS w/F115 Yamaha 4-stroke.
Dry weight of boat: 1115 lbs.
Motor weight: 400 lbs.

With 3 batts, elect. trolling motor, 2 guys, gear, 1/2 tank of gas. (32 gal. tank) getting 43 mph. on GPS.

Has stock 13x19 prop. Motor mounted on 2nd hole.

I think it will push that 1800 Explorer just fine. My Angler is rated for 135 hp.

The Yamaha F115 is so smooth and quiet you won't believe it.

My paint started peeling on the bottom-right side on the rivets where the transom meets the bottom just right of centerline. It took off like wild-fire. Peeling was all the way to bow by end of season. But only on the right side below the splash rail.
If your boat doesn't start peeling right away, you are probably going to be OK. Most of the guys I've heard from noticed peeling after 2 or 3 times in the water.

Hope this helps.

Steve1,

Check the entire bottom of the boat for peeling. Peeling on mine is concentrated at very front bottom of the bow, and keeps peeling back from there. From other posts it sounds like others are seeing it start in different areas.

How did the "loaner" 1775 ProV with a 115 Mercury (Yamaha) 4 stroke perform? -- With 4 people (avg 150 lbs), gear, nearly full of fuel, rear livewell full, it had to grunt for a few seconds to get on plane, but it wasn't a problem in my opinion. With one or two people, it's up on plane right away.

Although I didn't spend much time wide open (after my new boat blew, I didn't think it'd be a good idea to bring back a blown loaner boat), I did air it out twice, and got 43 out of it each time (same as Spallgard in his 1700 Angler SS). This is with a relatively inexpensive aluminum prop.

By the way, after having a talk with the bank today, I decided to buy the 1775 ProV "loaner boat". Had 10 hrs on it when I got it to use (I must have put 20+ on myself since then). Think I got a great deal -- $18500 with the 115 Merc 4ST, front/rear trolling motors, depth finder, cover, snap out carpet, etc. Fell in love with the 115 4ST motor from the first trip out. The only way to tell it's running at idle is listen for water coming from the cooling hole. Motor sounds like it escaped from a Toyota Corolla or something. Totally different experience than the 200 Opti. I'll be keeping both; Tyee sits on my lift, ProV will be on the trailer ready for new adventures.

Good luck with your Explorer!

I took delivery of a 2003 Lund Fisherman 1800 on April 25, 2003 (My Wedding Aniversary Date of 22 years (Very Good Wife and she doesn't even like fishing!!)) and I don't have any paint peeling problems. I think that it is only a few with that problem, if any of them do, but if you have that problem I hope they get the problem solve for you.

God Bless

The paint company is the one having to stand for the repaints. Bad primer was the problem, I am told.
It is not a large percentage of boats, but with the numbers of boats Lund builds, it does make for quite a few paint jobs.
This same thing has happened to all the US auto manufacturers over the years, intermittently. However, on an auto, you don't have to lift the unit and paint the bottom. Most body shops do not have this capability which is a necessity to address this problem. Otherwise, the problem could be handled locally.
Lund is not alone on having this problem.

Curious as to what other boat manufacturers are having paint issues. Just facts please............. Just as it isn't fair to slam Lund, it isn'nt fair to dismiss the issue because others are in the same boat (pun intended)

There is one brave soul who spoke of this problem on his Alumacraft within this very thread, by golly.

I'm staying pretty calm about this situation right now because I have not taken my boat in yet for the dealer to look at, but if I they have to de-rig it, send it back to the factory only to get it back a couple of months later and like the post said earlier about it sitting outside for a couple of months, I AM GOING TO BE VERY VERY PISSED OFF. I am really hoping it doesn't come down to that. I have had a really really bad experience with a Tracker boat that took over a year to remedy, and I was still not satisfied with the outcome. So I decided to dump that boat at a loss and spend the money on what was supposed to be a "top of the line" aluminum boat and look what I get. Just call it bad luck I guess.

Nobody involved is happy about it.
How would you like to be the head of production at a boat company and findout you received som primer that doesn't stick?

Yeah, like right now I'm supposed to feel sorry for those guys? Give me a break.
