I am in the market for a new outboard with more HP and Trim and Tilt.

I am looking at Yamaha and Mercruiser. Neither one make a tiller with that many HP so it is an add on from the dealer.

Now the question. Does anyone currently own or has anyone ever operated a newer tiller motor of this size without hydraulicly assisted steering? If so can you comment on the torque of the engine when at power and the ability to steer at rest or at idle.

I want to add I have gotten a price of $7,963 for a Yamaha 4 Stroke with the tiller package and a steering assist package that is not hydraulic, with prop, tax and installed on the boat. What do you guys think of the price?

Hey Scott,

All the outboard manufacturers make a 90 hp tiller. They all make 4 and 2 strokes. These are standaed, stock motors.

Suzuki and Yamaha make tillers with a torque dampening gizmo, but none of them use hydrolics.

The best thing to do is go look at them and if you can take a test drive.

You can reduce torque by trimming your motor to find the sweet spot where the tiller becomes easy to hang on to. You may have to adjust your trim tab on the lower unit also to get the motor to steer straight.

Lots of guys running big tillers.

As for bigger hp tillers I have run 90's in Merc. 4 stroke, Omc(bmc)Ficht 2 stroke, Honda and Yamaha 4 stroke. For the best one with no or very little torque on the stick you can not beat the Honda in any conditions. For trolling Yamaha seems to be the best (lowest idle speed). Top speed the 2 strokes seemed to have them beat. Fuel economy is tough to beat on any of the fours.
This is just what I have experienced with 90hp tillers. Good luck on your purchase.
As for the price thing I can not help you,

I got a 90 Merc a couple years ago from outboard sales on the internet and saved about $1500 with sales price no tax and hanging it myself. Tillers aren't very hard to hook up with a little mechanical skill. One problem is they are drop shipped on your curb so have your buddies ready to move a 300-400lb box!

I'm running a honda 90 tiller on my lund alaskan 20'. Steering torque is there when getting on plane but after trimming to sweet spot it is gone. Run 20 + miles on erie when conditions permit with no effort. I really like the control and extra room that a tiller gives. mariner
