LAST EDITED ON Jul-13-01 AT 07:16AM (CST)[p]Anybody try using Scorpion spoons in Minnesota? Any luck? On a down rigger or a dipsey? I'm thinking about trying them on Rainy Lake next month. Any color suggestions?

Scorpion and other spoons are indeed effective for walleyes, northerns, the occasional muskie, etc. We Minnesotans still underutilize spoons for walleyes...too much tradition around backtrolling Lindy Rigs?
Dipsey's, downriggers and even bottom bouncers with spoons can all work for you. Also, consider a spoon flatlined behind a planer board anywhere from 10 to 100 feet or more behind the board. Try a snap weight 50' in front of the spoon, too.
Colors? For Rainy try silver, blue, green and purple/rainbow or combos of these colors. (Maybe a fluorescent orange as well)
Experiment, have fun and be safe. Please post us to let us know how you fared!

P.S. Try a Bomber Long A (the one that's about five inches long and skinny) or a Husky Jerk #13 or #18 in the same colors mentioned above... ignore any critics who tell you these can't work.
If the fish are slow
A) try a Flatfish or Lazy Ike tipped with a crawler 3-6 feet behind a sinker; drift or slow troll...
B) Instead of slowing down try speeding up by trolling a crankbait i.e. Shad Rap, etc. over 2.5 mph just to see what happens..
C) Last but not least try shallow fish especially in wind or cloudy conditions. 2 feet to 6 feet deep to start just for giggles.

We have caught fish using Shad Raps, Super Shad Raps, Lightning Shad, Reef Runners and stick-type baits. Trolling speeds are 2-5 mph. I just thought of giving spoons a try since they are so effective on Erie.
