Looking for advice. I am thinking of buying a boat with a 1991 115 merc motor powering it. Does any one have experience with this motor? Should I have the motor checked out by a mechanic or is a test drive good enough. What about checking cyl. compresion. The owner says he has had no problems with the motor and has no problem with getting it looked at. Motor looks clean. any Ideas welcome.

I have just a bit newer 115, but I would do all the things you said. Take it to a marine dealer and have them check it out. I don't doubt the guy is telling you the truth, but better safe than sorry. By chance is that the 2+2 motor?

I'm not sure how you would have them checked, but gears in the lower unit, if they are worn and need to be replaced, might cost more than the bluebook on the motor.
I'm not an expert, but have experience with worn out gears in the lower unit of a '96 Merc 115 hp.
