View Full Version : Large Board Releases
Just got my new Riviera boards, with a sample or-10 release. Was playing in garage with 30# power pro with the release at max tention.Seems to release too easy????? Plan on using large Reef Runners, and other lures but i know the Reef Runners really pull.
Question,is this the release i need? Same release if dropping a dipsy diver off the boards? Would like to buy the right ones first. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-14-01 AT 04:51AM (CST)[p]I use the white offshore releases which i think are the OR-3, i use them with braided line and have for years, they work great for me putting the line all the way to the back of the release but when real rough pulling the big baits i sometimes put the black offshore releases on if the boards are really jumping, normal days the black releases are more than you need hope this helps..Bob

Something else you can do with the releases that you have now is
to take the spring that's in the release and nudge it all the way
back with a screwdriver etc. that puts more tension on the release, Hope I explained this right, Can also try Laurvick releases also, I own both brands for the Big Willie boards that
we have.

We use the classic Cumler pinch pad release trolling big boards on Erie. Key is to use rubberbands with them. We also use superline - Spiderwire in our case.
Make a loop in your line by twisting it 3-4 times, cinch the rubberband around the loop, put the rubberband in the release. You can either rig it so the band has to break by putting it behind the pads, or just put the band in the release so it pulls out. I put some tension on the band and put both sides of the band in the release. We buy several size rubberbands to use depending on conditions, and what you are pulling. At an office supply store, buy size 12, 14, 16. 12/14 works most of the time. Only go to 16s when it is real rough - you may need them for the small dipseys and probably need to rig so the band must break with the dipseys.
The band helps prevent false releases from the surge of the boards. They can also help you detect small fish by watching the band stretch/bounce compared to the other lines - if something looks "different" - check it. If you rig them to just pull out of the release you can simply reel the band onto your reel - no need to break them off - and reuse them when resetting lines. Because of the loop in the line - the band stays put so this also helps you know what amount of lineout is working when you are running multiple setups.
Good Luck,
Steve
