View Full Version : Pulling A Ranger 619 DVS

I have finally gotten my significant other over the sticker shock with some of the newer boats. (She still remembers the $ 6,500 for the '87 Crestliner 1750.) We have been looking at Lund 18' and 19' boats with 150 to 175 Hp. motors on them. It has finally dawned on me, I might even be able to afford a Ranger 619 DVS. So the question is: will my 2001 F150 4X4 with the big V8 and the towing package on it, have any problems pulling a Ranger 619 DVS with a 200 Hp. motor on it and stuff in it? I notice my Crestliner behind me, but I think the flooring is so wet, the thing weighs a ton. Does anyone have any experience pulling a Ranger with less than a 3/4 ton?

I have a 690 with a 175 hp. and I pull it all over the country and have had NO problems and have the same truck as you , rick

Are you serious?

Your truck has to be rated to tow between 7-8,000 pounds and the rig you are talking about couldn't possibly weigh more than 5,000 pounds - probally a lot less.

Now if you are just trying to justify getting a 3/4 ton Diesel...by all means GO FOR IT!

You said that you noticed your Crestliner when you towed it. You will notice your ranger 619 with a tandem trailer. There is no way you can tow that much weight and not be aware of it. Having said that, however, your truck will be fine for towing your 619. Since I bought my Ranger four years ago I always look at the tow vehicles that are pulling them. My observations are that 75% of the trucks are 1/2 ton units. The rest are 3/4 ton or larger SUV's.

Thanks for your opinions. Hard enough to get her to maybe OK the big ticket boat, but the boat and a new 6 litre diesel Ford, "I wouldn't get either.

I forgot about a dual axel trailer. You are right, should be no problem.

Any thoughts on the difference in ride between the Lund Pro V and a Ranger. Do glass boats require more maintenance? Wax, ........? Maintenance is not my strong suit.

I'm with Freebyrd - this has got to be a ploy to convince the wife to get a diesel. Your 150 will tow that rig without any difficulty whatsoever. One other thing, anyone who says that my truck is SO powerful that "I don't even know it's back there" is lying. That statement is right up there with "my dry storage stays dry" and GPS speeds in excess of 60 mph.

I pull 619's ...620's...621's...also Lund Barons, Tyees, and Pro-V's, etc., almost daily, with a GMC Sierra 1/2 ton 4X4 which has a 5.3 Vortec. Actually, a 619 sitting on a Ranger Tandem pulls quite easily.
It is windy and mountainous here, by the way.
You should be fine.

I pull a Skeeter ZX2050 with 250HPDI/T-8 and lots of gas and tackle, a little bit heavier boat than a 619, with the exact same truck. No problem. Towing is alot easier with the dual axles, compared to towing a 20' tin with a single axle. I've found I can improve my mpg if I keep my foot out of it. Average around 12mpg towing.

Boz, Just guessing here, but i think that boat fully rigged, trailer and all, is around 5000lbs. Your truck is around 5200-5800lbs. That said, you will definitely know it's back there! I'am sure your f150 will pull it, but you won't be breaking any speed records. I pull my 1900ifs with a 200hp and T8 with a full tournament load with a 1500 GMC with a 5.7 and i dread every hill i come to. When my pocket book will allow me, a 3/4 ton will be my next truck for sure. Good luck, and the 619DVS is a real nice rig!

Boz,

What’s the rear axle ratio on your F150?

Glass boats do require periodic waxing, with a wax that specifically designed to protect the gelcoat from UV damage. No big deal, I do mine twice a year and it takes all of about an hour and a half.

IMHO, the Ranger will provide the better ride.

Boz,
I have a 690 VS with a 175 Merc, 9.9 kicker and gear. I went to a grain elevator and had the boat and vehicle weighed. The boat weighs 3640 and the vehicle, Jeep Cherokee Classic, 4.0 with towing package, weighs 3660. This is not the best situation for a tow vehicle but then again I have been to Northern Wi. many time, I live in Northern Ill, and have pulled out of every boat landing with no problem. I tow in 3rd and drive about 64mph and so far have not had any problems. Your F150 should handle your boat just fine. By the way, next spring I am lobbying for either a F150 or 250!!!!

I have had both the Lund Pro-V series and the Ranger Fisherman series and would not go back to the Lund unless they were pretty much giving them away. The glass does require more maintenance(wax 2-3 X a year) but the benefits far outway the maintenance. Take both for a test drive if possible. You may like the Lund better. Either way you can't go wrong. Both are quality boats.By the way I pull my 620 with a Chevy 1500 4X4 Z71 Silverado with no problems.

That truck will pull it with no problem.Stopping with that much weight will be more of a issue.

You have plenty of truck to pull the Ranger. My Navigator does a great job and I will bet you have a longer wheel base with your F150.
Make sure you get a tandem axel trailer! I wax my my Ranger 2-3 times a year, doesn't take long if you are wiping it down after it comes out of the water. As far as ride vs. a Pro-v, both are the cadillacs of walleye boats (alumn vs glass). They ride differently. I prefer my Ranger to the my Pro-v I just sold, but I went from an 1800 pro-v to a 619dvs. I am sure the 14" in length makes a big difference. Rode in a buddies 1900 le a few years back, very impressive. I will definitly look at a pro-v when I get new boatitus next year! (I hope my wife doesn't see this) It helps to keep the price of the Ranger down. Good luck with your decision, if you go Ranger or Lund you will not go wrong.
