I heard that an 1800 Lund actually sank during the MWC Oconto. Apparently in about 10 minutes the wind shifted from the south to the northeast and they had 5-7 footers instantly. The Lund apparently hit bottom on Pensaukee point and the transom broke off. A distress call went to the coast guard but they could not get there for 45 minutes. The Lund owner told them that they already had 3ft of water in the boat and were going down. Another tournament boat rescued them and the Lund actually sank. I thought these boats were supposed to float when full of water.

The word I got was from a very reliable source, but would like to hear from others that might have been involved.

You should contact Jim Coon for the details as he was the man in charge of the various rescues. but As i heard it, their main engine went out and the waves swamped them. don't know the model of the boat off hand.

What is significant is that team 7 pulled them out of the water without concern for themselves or their weight (see other post of their names as I'm at home now without the records, Jessogne was one of them).

The waves were increedible and a complete surprise to all. down south, no anglers had any idea there was outrageous waves until they came north. probably a record number of late boats. thjose that made it in said on stage they were just glad to have made it.

I for one was truely impressed with the efforts by the tournament directors to coordinate the rescues of several boats and the anglers that volunteered to go out after them when the coast guard was "not available".

There were several such "calvaries to the rescue" not to mention the team that saved a number of people on Thursday when a non-tournament boat went down.

It was an exciting weekend and the MWC anglers showed everybody what they are made of. I'm proud to say I've met and know these people.
