Looking to purchase during the boat show season an 04 1600 Explorer console, looking to tie on a 70hp Yamaha on back. I was looking at the Yamaha brochure and found the same displacement, only difference tween the 60 & the 70 was the top-end rpm range? Why is this motor set up this way? Would there be any "real" advantage as to going to the 70, just to have a higher redline?

Thanks

If you look Yamaha brochure for the last couple of yars or so it seem like they are pushing four stroke and direct injected outboards. The carbureted motors and EFI's are on there way out. There is not a lot of difference between these motors as far as performance, maybe a mile and hour or two. Back in the early 90tys I bought a 1775 Pro-V and I read the same thing you did but the big difference back then is the 70hp was more money then the 60hp and you had to spend something like $450.00 on a tiller handle. The 60hp was called the Pro 60 and the tiller handle was standard. After I compared how much more I was spending if I was to buy the 70hp for 2mph at the most I bought a Pro 60. You can buy what you want but right now I would buy the 75hp four stroke because it's the wave of the future and the fuel economy is much better...

60 is a de-tuned 70. There are others.
The 115 two stroke is a de-tuned 130.
The 150 two stroke is a de-tuned 200. There are more, too.
Carbs, heads, reeds, exhaust tuners, and/or combinations of, make the differences in most cases.
All engine manufacturers do this.
