I have a 2003 200hp Yamaha HPDI and am having trouble with the trim. It functions fine, but there is sometimes a small grinding sound. Any thoughts as to the problem? I am not very mechanically inclined, but I'm guessing maybe sand in the lift or low grease/fluid. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Goose,

Use some marine grease on the end of the 2 ram tubes on your trim. The bearing's sockets are probably dry.

Goose Egg,

My 2002 HPDI did the exact same thing which was always puzzling. My new 2004 HPDI hasn't done it yet. Toolman's tip sounds like the right idea... The 200 HPDI's are a sweet machine.

I have a HPDI 150 that did the same thing.
Putting grease on the ends of the ram tubes is the solution.
It does wash off periodically but there seems to always be some extra grease hanging around the grease points elsewhere on the motor.
A little dab'l doya.

Thanks guys. I'll give it a shot. The HPDI is a great motor.

What Toolman said is correct and a quick fix the root cause is to make sure that the fittings the polished trim tubes come out from are tight - use an open-end wrench. I have an '02 200 VMAX HPDI and had the same thing. Chad at the Yamaha trailer tightened the fittings and have not experienced the problem since.

The noise you hear is not damaging if it's addressed is what I was told.

Ditto others - great engine!
