I'm heading to Southern California during Thanksgiving this year and would like to go fishing during the time I'm there.

Are there any charters out of San Diego or Southern L.A. area that you would recommend?

How about any type of Bay Fishing that I could rent a boat and do?

How about some piers to fish off of?

I don't think I can go a week without fishing and I'm not willing to see if I can.

Party boat fishing out of Oceanside is a good option if you just have an evening. I often do this when there on business. Very good fishing for sea bass when I have done it. Basically vertical jigging so your walleye skills will make you deadly. You will enjoy it more w/ your own equipment. I would recommend a reel like a 4000 Stradic, or a levelwind like a 6500 or even a curado type and a medium heavy rod. If you have more time, an overnight, offshore tune trip is unbelievable. You literally catch large tuna til your arms hurt too badly to pull in any more. Usually equipment on these runs is first class so you need not bring your own.

Just returned from trip out there 3 weeks ago. We fished for the entire time. The charter outfit we used was Fishermans Landing at Point Loma aboard the Galillean. A day trip, which left at 10pm and returned about same time next evening. Primary target fish was Albacore but Bonito and a 5 ft. shark also were caught. Lots of fun. Rod rental was $12. Trip and Mexican license (which are sold together at time you show up) were $175. Also, take your walleye spinning outfit spooled with 14/6 fireline. We fished at the harbor there in the evenings throwing jigs on 1/4 ounce heads and caught halibut, sand bass, shark, corvina and yellow fin croaker. Chrome rattle traps and slip sinker rigs with frozen anchovies also worked well. This was off the docks right in front of Fishermans landing. We also fished right across Mission bay from Sea World near the highway bridges an caught rockfish and halibut. My son even had a little battle with an octapus who wrapped an arm around his jig and slipped back under a rock. A 6ft. med. rod will work well. Our best plastic tails were purchased at fishermans landing. We used a fliptail body about 4 inches long in a color called ghost shrimp, but experiment. Two other charters at the same location are Point Loma Sportfishing and H&M Landing. Have fun.
