I've heard that blue walleye are considered extinct, however on a recent trip to Canada the guide told us that people were catching blue walleye in a certain lake. We did catch 3 or 4 walleye in that lake that were definitely different than normal walleye, with a blueish hue. What's the deal here? Any information would be appreciated...I can't seem to find much on the web concerning this subject!

The number of blue walleye is so low that it is considered extinct. We have however caught some on the French River on many occasions. They are alot smaller than yellow walleye, usually no more than 14". They have a purple/blue hue to the cheeks and belly. I have always thrown them back, so I don't know about the taste.

That should about cover the "myths" and the "truths"
Enjoy!

The blue walleye is not extinct. The blue pike which once was fished commercially on the great lakes is. They are different species. There are even some Canadian lodges which advertise fishing for blue walleye. Check the archives. There were a couple of threads on the blue walleye during the last year.
