Scott:
I know I'm not the first to suggest this, but with all the recent trashing that's going on, it may be a good time to revisit the issue.
Can we get the system set up to eliminate all the name calling, bashing, slanderous remarks, etc. that's done by posters who are hiding behind pen names and alias' by making posts require the more than just a phantom post name?
I think the tone of the board would be greatly improved if that was required.
Just a thought. Let's have constructive thoughts (and criticisms if need be) promoted inside these confines.
Thanks

Trashing is going to go on in public forums, that's just a fact. It's also a fact (my fact... hehe...) that outdoor folks (hunting and fishing) are people who have strong opinions and don't like to back down. I've been a regular visitor of this site and many other hunting sites for years. Requiring passwords or full names just doesn't work, IMO, because there are always ways around it - plus the fact that many people will stop posting because of the hassle, and it is way worse to lose some good helpful folks (who don't like passwords or using their names for whatever reason) just to keep out a few bad ones.
The best remedy is to ignore the bad sports. That's easy to say, and in fact is even easier to do. :)
Anyway, unfortunately the trashing will continue in waves, sometime light, sometimes heavy.
Good fishing everyone,
Box (Chris Boxmeyer, MN)
I'm with you on this one Box! I hate (and avoid) the hastle of sigining on to post~only one of the sites I frequent require it. and it has way more trash than WC.

10-4 to Box's comment. Ignore them and they do go away.

I have seen this before on other forums. There really is nothing that can be done about it. WC promises to eliminate someone if they write nasty language but that doesn't cover opinions no matter what they are and I suppose it really should be that way here in the USA. About the only thing you can do is remember the people who have offended you and don't respond to any of their posts in the future even if you have the best solution to their problem. What goes around comes around.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-18-01 AT 08:42AM (CST)[p]AMEN!! I'm a big boy and I can turn the channel if I want, or, not watch! Scott makes a valid attempt, but as you have said, not everything can be covered. Besides, people agree and disagree with me and I learn from BOTH!

Hey Mark,
I understand your frusteration with the bashing and basically rude posts that happen here. And everywhere for that matter. I have been to several other message boards on the net and I can tell you two things.
1- Many are far worse than here. Not all of em but there are a few, where if you are not a "regular" you get ripped to bits for even daring to post.
2- Many do not have the amount of visitors that we do. We are the single, LARGEST walleye oriented entity, anywhere. We have well over 7 million hits a month. Our hits are more than twice what they were a year and a half ago. The negative posts, and negative people are much fewer than they were then as well.
We prowl the boards regularly, myself several times a day, looking for offensive and bad or vulgar posts.
One of the best ways to help police the board is to hit the little "Alert" button at the bottom of every post. You do not have to fill out why, or even give your name or pen name. When you click on "Alert", a message comes up with all the pertinent info on that post. All anyone need do id to hit the buttojn at the botton to send it. We get that message via e mail and checkout the post.
Simple, fast, effective. Anyone can do it. We spend a good deal of time here, but cannot be all places all the time. If you (hypothetical user, not necesarily you directly ,Mark)take 5 seconds to go through the alert process, we can be on the problem even faster.
As to going to a registered forum, the sad fact is, registering only sends people away, and the bad posts continue. Look at any board that has gone registered, their popularity has dropped.

My point was simply that if we required people to show their faces, we'd have much less of the trashing that goes on. I'm a big boy and can turn the channel too, but I don't want to have to wade through all the crap to get to the good stuff all the time if that's at all an option.

Hey Mark.
I understand your point totally. I should also have mentioned in my post above that as soon as we find a better way, we will probably do it.
Have fun..........R

Personally, I feel that the trash talk has really diminished since it is now summer. Winter really brings out the attitudes with people and the negative posts seem to be way down. I would prefer to not have to log in with a password and such because you get the visitors that only visit on occasion and that is what makes this forum fun. If there were passwords and registration, we would lose all those maybe fisherman from our help.
