Frank in Thunder Bay; Could you e-mail me with a few pointers for late July, early August on this lake? Have been there in June but never later. Staying at Thunderbird Resort. Anyone else with any help would be welcome. Thanks and good luck...SkeeterBoy

Hey Skeeterboy?,
I think Frank only fishes LDML in the winter. Like you, I've fished the lake a lot in May and June. Early July is the latest I've fished the lake other than fall. My guess is you'll want to look for the mid lake humps. Jigs, Lindy rigs and spinners should work. I'd work crawlers, leeches, and minnows in that order. Check with Kerry at the T-Bird. I think he's got a guy from Iowa who stays there the whole month of July and limits his fishing to real early in the morning. I think he stays in Cabin 6.
You might want to check with Buutsy, one of the seasonal campers. He drives a green ford F-150 with personalized plates, and fishes out of a Alumacraft boat. He might be able to help.
Last year in mid July I fished one day in near 100 degree heat with little wind. Picked up walleyes here and there on a jig and a leech. The next day, the temp dropped 30 degrees and the wind was fairly strong out of the west. With an orange warm harness my wife and I caught walleyes in 9' of water along Broad Point one after another. They bit equally well on a jig and a minnow. Weather conditions will be your key I believe.
Let me know how you did on your trip. I'm just about caught up on the home improvement projects and LDML is calling.
Have a great trip

Wenty is right Skeeterboy......I only fish LDML in the winter....I have a cottage on another lake ....but a lot of my buddies do very well in the summer. After you beat up on the little and medium guys that everyone beats up on spend a little time in the deeper water areas of the lake. The big Walleye at Lac key on herring in the summer. Not a lot of big guys are caught compared to the winter. If you see suspended schools of herring om your sonar or bait fish key in on them and troll the ares with big diving cranks. We use Rapalas. Be patient and you will be rewarded with large walleye.
