I got my prop stolen this winter and I need a replacement. The prop was a SS 17 pitch 4-blade Yamaha. The boat is a '97 Lund Tyee 1950 with Yamaha ProV 200.
The previous prop would only turn 5000 RPMs at my elevation of 5,000'. So I need less prop.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Dennis...bummer.
I am not familiar with a Yamaha 17p in 4 blade, and that makes this a guessing game.... but the Yamaha Performance Series (polished) comes in 18p in both 3 blade and 4 blade.
The black Yamaha SS 3 blade is available in 17p. It is a smaller diameter than the "performance Series" props.

Hey T-Mac,
I thought for sure it was a 17, but maybe it was a 15?? I lost a lot of my memory a few years ago and many of the details of my life are now a 'guessing game'. I'm pretty sure it was an odd number. It was polished silver. And it definitely had 4 blades.
What props would you recommend that I try as a starting point? The 18? I'd like to stick with the Performance Series, but I don't care if it's 4- or 3-blade, as long as it has good hole shot and top end. And how much should I expect to pay?
Thanks.

The only Yamaha prop I know in 4 blade is the "Performance Series".
But with you only getting 5000 rpms I'll bet you had at least an 18p.
I know it's awfully high elevation where you are running, Dennis. I'd take a stab at that Yamaha black 17p 3 blade SS....if I were to take a guess. It has a smaller diameter. The 19p in that series used to work well for us here at 3800' elevation, on a '97 1950 Tyee and Yamaha Pro V 200hp. We normally pitch down 2" pitch on the boats we sell that are going to be used up your way.
Lots of folks that run engines at that elevation go down to a 15 pitch prop on the engine of your size.
Your rpms are quite typical for that elevation.
It is nice to have both props, in case you want or need to run at a lower elevation and want to avoid overrevving your engine.
Take care

p.s.
You also might find that you might be better off with a 17 pitch three blade prop. Often you will be better off with the push from the 3-blade rather than the 4 blade - depending on load, rig, and weather and water conditions.
Take care

Every now and then I've taken it down to 2000'--and it was a rocket! But top end and RPMs only improved a little. But my usual haunts vary from 4500' to 7600', with most being somewhere in between.

Dennis,
I few months back I also had my Yamaha prop stolen off my fisherman here in the Salt Lake City area. Since It appears we don't live to far from each other, it's possible had it taken by the same Jerk(s)? Local Police around here claim Prop theft is on the rise!!! I only left my boat out of a garage one night when my prop was stolen, yet in a wierd way, I think I was very lucky. Nothing else was taken including the fish finders, tackle, poles, bow mount motor. They're only taking props for some reason?

Dennis, Here is a link to a good prop lock so they don't get your prop twice.

Dennis,
This is what you most likely had:
Yamaha Prop 13 3/4 18 Performance 4 Blade, Part Number MAR-GYT4B-V6-18. Closest thing I could find in a SS Yamaha Prop
This prop may work better
HI-5 (V-6) -- These propellers have a 3" progressive pitch and a parabolic rake of 26 to 30 degrees. Used on V-6 outboards and Mercruiser applications.

The High Five should help keep you on plane at slower speeds and increase you holeshot. Your RPM's should increase to around 5200, and speed may increase slightly

Dennis,
I have experience with big boats in your neck of the woods. I fish at Flaming Gorge quite a bit. I have had a Targa 2000 and I now own a Skeeter ZX2050. Both of these boats had 225 main motors but I am pretty sure you will be pleased with a Mercury High Five in probably a 19 pitch. These props work wonders on big boats at higher altitudes. You could also try a Mercury Trophy series. The trick will be to find a dealer that will allow you to demo several props without having to buy them first. I know Buckboard Marina at the Gorge has some demo props to try. Good Luck

Why not aim for max RPMs at 5600??

I parked mine on the street for a few days when the prop disappeared. I keep the graphs and trolling motor in the house and the rods locked in the rod lockers--and the cover is always on. I even thought about removing the prop, but didn't.

Dennis, 17" is the smallest pitch the High Five props drops down to. If you desire to get the max RPM you would have to get the prop reworked, as they can change the pitch of a prop. I would suggest you watch E-bay for one of these, as they go at about 1/2 the new price. Then getting the prop reworked doesn't seem so spendy...

if no one else mentioned it by now you need to get a prop lock, if you have a trailer then wheel lock too even on the spare and a lock on your hitch pin. it save times like this
