Check Precision Trolling. However, if you want the best of all the "poor man's downriggers," get a couple Dipsey Divers. The package contains a graph to guide in how to attain a specific depth. It's a combination of setting (0 to 3) and amount of line let out. Also, diving lures will help. With Dipseys you can reach 35 to 50 feet with no problem.

Leadcore line gets more involved and can be a pain.

You'll get this same reply many times, but I'll go first....get a copy of "Precision Trolling". There are numerous devices that will put you in front of fish at various depths..this book explains them all and provides pretty accurate dive charts for them as well. Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris) ps..I believe it can be ordered from the main page here..

First, I'll state that I am not a fan of trolling. I drove a charter boat on Lake Ontario for three years and got tired of it.I also find it much more of a challenge to find fish and entice them to bite a jig or crank or even a drifted worm harness. To reach that deep I would try jigging with a heavy spoon. I have found it to be a very effective way to catch deep 'eyes. Pete

Try leadcore line and a number 9 shad rap. I fish about 30 to 35 feet by using 5 colors of leadcore line with a 25 ft mono leader then the #9 shad rap and troll about 2.5 to 3 mph. This has produced very well. When you get a fish the rod will just fall back slightly and you'll think its a stick untill you get it about 25-50 feet from the boat. You'll need a fairly good sized baitcaster to hold the bulky line and a dipsy rod works good.

Good luck
Jim

Snap weights are cheap and easy. Get the book as mentioned earlier to find the correct weights for the depth that you want.

There are also good walleye baits out there that will reach those depths without any other devices. Get the book "Precision Trolling"
