Wondering what to expect to pay for a filter. Is it easy to change and how often is recommended?

Changing the filter is very easy. Make sure you have the correct size filter wrench. Depends on how much you use your motor. I change my oil/filter once per season. Hopefully, I will use it a lot more this year so I can change it twice!

On my 115 Yamaha I use fram # PH6017A, cost is about $7.00 at the automotive store. Changed at 10 hours, and then every spring, or when the oil starts to discolor from trolling. no problems. also use Quaker 10W/30 oil, and it meets mfg. specifactions.

Walleyes,
I have been running Fram on my twins since 2000. They have been fault free. The Yamahas were costing me $14 each plus tax. The Frams are $5. I know the purists will have heart failure. For your reference, here are some additional crosses. I have not tried any but the Fram. Would consider the NAPA if I could ever remember the number when I am in their shop.
Yamaha 5GH-13440-00 filter
Fram - PH6017A
NAPA - 1358
WIX - 51358
AC - 2057
K&N - KN-143

The key to being successful doing this yourself is getting the correct filter wrench. The plastic type does not work. The metal one needs have good pressure or it will spin. Watch your knuckles. Also watch that you do not knock off the plastic plug just to the left with the wrench handle.

I also use Fram filters. Half the price. If you make a hole in the filter with a screwdriver before you loosen it, you can catch a lot of the oil before it runs down the side of the engine.

Intersting point. With my twins, one I have to place a rag under the filter to catch the drainage when I remove it. The other has never been a problem as the filter seems to drain back into the engine. It makes no difference if they just ran or have been sitting for some time. It makes no difference if it is a Yamaha filter or Fram. Any thoughts? The shop didn't seem to think it was a problem.
