View Full Version : Trailer Wiring?

I have a 2000 Ford F-150 that came pre-rigged with a standard 4 prong (flat) wiring harness. Recently I purchased a trailer that was rigged with the 7 prong round RV type connection. Since the round connection is more popular I decided to purchase the round (7) connection for my truck to accept the trailer end.

I realize I won't have back up lights going from a 4 to a 7 and I don't need the electric brake wiring because my trailer has surge brakes. My question is the old 4 prong which I cut off the truck has a white, brown, green and yellow wire. The round connection I have to wire in it's place has 6 labeled terminals (screw type) and one round one in the middle (not labeled). The 6 are listed as 1 white, 2 blue, 3 green, 4 black, 5 red and 6 brown.

Assuming the white goes to the white terminal, the brown to the brown and the green to the green, which terminal should I put the yellow wire on? Or don't the colors match up going from 4-7? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

I do not rember the colors but most travel trailer places have the wireing format on file and will most of the time copy it off and give it to you or you could use a volt meter to check what goes to what then match it up with the other plug. Ford dealer may also be able to get you the info you need .

I found out the hard way the colors don't match so my first assumption was incorrect. After trying several combinations and making no headway I decided to drive to Quality Farm and Fleet and see if they would allow me to take one of their prewired 4-7 conversions apart as a reference.

What I found may save someone the aggravation down the road. The four prong flat wiring harness from your truck has a green, brown, yellow and white (sometimes blue) wire. The green wire connects to the #6 Brown terminal, the brown wire connects to the #3 Green terminal, the yellow wire connects to the #5 Red terminal and the white (sometimes blue) wire connects to the round (unlabeled) post in the middle.

Within 5 minutes of returning from Quality everything was hooked up and working. I hope this helps someone down the road!

I have a similar question, only with an 8-pin camper connector. I figured the colors didn't match up. Does anyone know what the standard colors are for the backup lights and for the charging circuit?
Thanks!

Kevin,

You stated you don't need the backup wire because your trailer has surge brakes. Some of the new trailers (with disc brakes) require the back up wire to activate a hydraulic solenoid which will allow the calipers ot back off and let you back up.

You may want to plan this into the plug now,..just in case.
