With the exchange rate, would it pay for someone in the U.S.to go into Canada and buy a rig?? What kind of duty or tariff would I have to pay upon re-entering the states?Warranty coverage the same? I think i can save some money.

There's a guy posting on the boats and motors page about saving a TON of money by doing exactly what you are talking about. Seems like it's too good to be true, I'm sure if I tried it I'd end up spending more than down here knowing my luck. If you try it please post and let us know your results.

A friend was looking into this also. He found out that there was onc snag. The emissions on the Candian motors are not legal in the States. Other things to check out are Duty and any excise tax due to your specific state.

I live in Michigan and just purchased a boat and motor in canada in May. I purchased a 19 foot Sylvan with a 115 hp Yamaha 4 stroke. The dealer provided a sticker which certifies that the motor meets our emission standards. I paid no canadien tax and no US duty. I did however have to pays sales tax at our secretary of State in order to get it registered. The canadien dealer made two invoices, one for the boat and trailer, the other for the motor, thus I only paid sales tax on roughly half the purchase price. I have friends who have gone to Canada to purchase 4 stroke kickers and saved enough money to buy LMS 1600 GPS! By all means, look into it. Jigger

Same as the above post.I live in MI and just brought back my new Lund, 70 hp Johnson and 8hp Evinrude kicker. I got the kicker for $1100 US (2000 new motor). Savings are considerable. They didn't even come and look at my rig on the bridge. No tariff/tax. My dealer also made out the two receipts. Free trade is great. Local OMC authorized repair facility is more than happy to do my 20 hr service check and any warranty concerns. Love the Lund!

Ditto to all of the above. I live in Washington State and purchased a custom aluminum boat in BC. I also saved a bundle.

Yamaha is putting the U.S. emmisions compliance sticker on at the factory. Also, if you purchase Yamaha products, and set up an agreement with a local repair shop, you will have warranty coverage on Canadian motors. Finally, my builder delivered my boat, motor(s) and trailer package to our side of the border. I did not pay a cent of duty on the package. The beauty of purchasing a Yamaha motor with a boat is that it then becomes duty free.

I received a quote of $8600.00(US Funds) for a 2-stroke 90 with oil injection. This did not include a prop or controls. I purchased mine in Canada for $8100.00(Canadian Funds) and this included a SS prop and controls. The exchange rate at the time was 1.54. If my math is correct, I purchased my main motor for $5259.74 A smaller savings was gained on my Yamaha T8.

Yes, you can save a bundle. Be aware that Honda will not honor a Canadian warranty in the US. Yamaha will, but you need to find a dealer or repair shop that will. The US dealer can enter you in the computer. Many dealers refuse to do so because they cannot compete with Canadian prices. They will tell you that they CANNOT. That is not true. The truth is that they refuse to do so. You cannot blame them in some ways. The US has levied import duties on these motors to protect our own market. This hurts border dealers because they cannot compete with Canadian prices. These duties certainly did not help protect OMC.

I would recommend purchasing across the border, just educate yourself on what to be cautious about.

Take care,

I bought my Yamaha in Canada 2 years ago, the only way to go, no tax, no duty, no problems. I've also heard that the American dealers will not do warranty work on a Canadian bought Yamaha, but remember, it's a Yamaha, your not going to have any problems anyway.
Good Luck
